A snippet of Joyride or Die:
She had Eddie drop her off two blocks away from Mary's. Party gossip would have filled her best friend in that she left with Steve. When Chrissy came back this late, Mary would assume things happened—especially since it was Steve Harrington and everyone new his rep—but she'd cover for that the same way Chrissy had covered for her plenty of times. She'd slip into Mary's house, change into PJs, and the night would be nothing but a hoarded memory.
Chrissy didn't account for rumors.
She'd left Jason at parties before, but usually after he'd gotten obnoxiously drunk. She'd never left any of those parties with infamous party boy Steve Harrington, whose year of flirting with monogamy had blown up in a public fight and an equally public drink being thrown in his face. Or Nancy's face. Everyone knew that a drink had been thrown, anyway. Just like everyone knew his girlfriend had left with Jonathan Byers, the guy she'd cheated on him with last year. Everyone knew Steve had left with Chrissy Cunningham, even if the timeline was a little fuzzy on when who left with whom.
But he must have fucked Chrissy to get back at Nancy. Nancy must have fucked Jonathan to get back at Steve.
Chrissy didn't even have a chance to give Jason the "it's not you, it's me" speech because he called her a cheating bitch in homeroom, and she was single by first period. It's what she'd wanted, but it stung, especially with the truth of it. She had cheated, technically, even if she'd meant to break it off with Jason when she'd done it. But it wasn't a secret. He knew and he was telling the school and no one believed that she'd tried to drop Steve off and hit a deer, even with Steve showing up with white gauze wrapping his arm to corroborate her. It didn't matter what time she'd come home: it only mattered that she left with Steve.
Half of her friends weren't speaking to her. It was a rough morning.

Snippet of the Werewolf Steve story:
"Are we going to talk about what this means for Will?" Nancy asked, glancing at Jonathan.
Jonathan's fingers whitened on the camera, but he didn't stop staring at the monster blood. No, not the monster blood—Steve's blood, still monstrous but passing for human. More blood than a kid could have safely lost.
"He's fine," Jonathan insisted.
"Jonathan—" Nancy started softly.
"No! He's got to be fine," Jonathan interrupted her. "Look at that."
"What? The blood?"
"That thing shredded Steve. The fight lasted what, thirty seconds? There's blood everywhere. This creature, whatever it is, is messy. The police didn't find and sign of Will other than his bike. No blood. So this thing can't have gotten him."

A snippet of the Joyride or Die WIP:
They'd gotten distracted. There was a rustle in the leaves, and Steve was spinning before Chrissy even realized what was happening, bat whistling through the air. He caught the dog-monster on the shoulder, sending it rolling back into the trees.
"Run!" Steve shouted, grabbing her hand. They were close to Forest Hills, but that thing was also close on their tails, scrabbling after them in a lopsided way that suggested Steve had damaged something in the joint. That was probably what was keeping it from catching them.
There were lights through the trees ahead, and they ran harder. Chrissy could hear the thing closing as the broke through the treeline. It didn't stop; there was no olly olly oxen free from fiends. There was a trailer directly ahead of them: Steve broke left; Chrissy sprinted right. The leaping dogstrosity slammed head first into the wall, shaking it with the giant bong of struck sheet metal. Chrissy looked frantically around for anything she could use against it, but Steve was already moving back towards it. The dogstrosity shook itself and spun to face Steve, ignoring Chrissy. She wished she had some way to make it regret that, but there was nothing but gravel, and that wasn't likely to do jack.
The window of the trailer slammed up, and Eddie Munson stuck his head and half his body out the window.
"What the fuck are you doing to my trailer?" he snarled. The dogstrosity, attention caught, leaped up for him, petaled mouth open and slick with slime. "Jesus fuck!" Eddie yelped, jerking back. Steve took the distraction to knock the thing over again. Eddie's head appeared back in the window.

🚗 Sequel to the Road and the Sky (steddissy)
An excerpt from the sequel to the Road and the Sky:
Last year's poetry unit had them reading Robert Frost: the woods are lovely, dark, and deep.
Bullshit. The woods were a creepy, monster-infested tripping hazard, and Chrissy was never stealing another car. And the description might be lacking, but the poem was spot on about the miles to go before they sleep.
"Are you going to get in trouble for damaging the car?" she asked Steve. He shrugged.
"Probably, but it's not a big deal. He's not really going to kill me. We hit a deer. It happens. He's going to yell, maybe ground me. And then my mom's going to unground me two days later because he's being unreasonable, and it was an accident."
"I'm still sorry," she said.
"Hey, don't be," Steve said. "Seriously. That thing was headed towards the trailer park. You probably saved someone's life tonight by hitting it. I can't be mad about that."
"I thought we agreed you were allowed to be mad," Chrissy said. "You're allowed to be mad at me."
She'd feel better if he got mad. If he raged at her for screwing up and then was sorry so they could move on.
"I love that car," Steve said. "I don't love it more than keeping someone alive. If I'd been behind the wheel and seen that thing, I'd have hit it on purpose. Seriously, stop worrying about it. I'm not gonna get mad."
She didn't really believe him, but she wasn't going to argue.

A snippet of the Werewolf Steve story:
At Jonathan's nod, Steve started backtracking their steps towards the weird tree. Their initial bit of speed dragged slower as Will struggled to keep up. When had the kid gone missing? There wasn't anything to eat here that wasn't rotting and toxic, and Steve had yet to smell water anywhere. The sooner they were out of here the better.
Except… there was no hole in the tree. Steve knew he'd brought them back to the right place. Their trail dead ended here, at a solid trunk. No sign of them anywhere else.
"Steve?" Jonathan asked, voice uncertain. Steve pawed at the trunk, hoping for any give, but his claws did nothing but peel off bark and gouge the wood.
"Where's the way out?" Will asked, small and scared.
"I think this is where it was," Jonathan said. Steve growled agreement. "If that monster made the hole we came in through… and it's gone now… Steve. You killed it. How are we getting home?"

A snippet from the lab kid Steve story:
"Do you want to put on a movie or some music or something?" Munson asks.
Steve shrugs. "We can if you want. I don't really watch movies." He doesn't understand the point of movies and books; they're so flat compared to spending time with people, and he can't influence what happens, which is unsatisfying.
"What? Like none? Who doesn't watch movies?"
"They're pretty boring."
"You have got to be watching the wrong movies," Munson insists, mind already flipping through his favorites.
"If you think you can find one I like, be my guest." It's not like Steve likes being left out of this huge social phenomenon.
"Bet your ass I will," Munson says, and it's reflexive because the thought immediately following it is. Like fucking hell he'll hang out with the freak again.
Oh.
Munson thinks of himself as a freak, too. Doesn’t understand how wrong he is, which of them is the real freak, but it resonates. It doesn’t matter if Munson doesn’t know anything about Steve; Steve’s never had an equal relationship in his life.

A snippet from the lab kid Steve story:
"Yeah, let's go grab something. We can pick up pizza on the way, save the delivery fee," Munson says.
"I'm hungry. Why don't we just go get pizza first?" Steve suggests, hating the echo of hunger coming from Munson. "We can grab a movie after and come back here?"
"That works, too," Munson says, because he's proud, but his mind has grabbed onto the offer with a relentless please please please and a desperate craving for a cigarette. He doesn't ask to smoke one; doesn't let himself think about actually having one. He's only got five left and no idea when he'll get more.
They take Munson's van to the pizza place. The waitress looks at them oddly, almost frowns, but Steve smiles sweetly and says, "Hi. My friend Eddie and I would like to order," and her face smooths out under his nudging. Eddie’s mind is stuck between disbelief at her sudden non-reaction to him and my friend Eddie.
"What would you like?" the waitress asks.
Munson's mind is on a thick crust supreme, filling and full of flavors; it's on the cheesy bread he can almost never afford with its rich marinara; it's on the cinnamon twists, sweet and warm out of the oven, dipping them in the cup of frosting. He only had them once, two years ago, for his birthday.
Munson shrugs. "Whatever. You're buying, you choose." He hopes hopes hopes.
Steve starts small, casual. He's got the model from Eddie's head for what Eddie's going to think is normal. He's short to throw an arm over Eddie's shoulder—and around his waist would be weird, gay, and that will panic Eddie even when Steve doesn't care—but he can nudge Eddie with his elbow, and once he gets used to that, Steve will escalate to grabbing his forearm, tugging him along. He has a plan, every gesture mapped out, like that thing about boiling frogs in water.
