A true to life account of the near tragedy at Montreal! The Human Fly No. 11, dated July 1978. Cover art by Frank Robbins and Ernie Chan. While his comic book career lasted 19 issues The Human Fly's real-life stunt career appeared to end following this motorcycle stunt on 7 October 1977 (as far as I know his only other stunt was in 1976 when he stood atop a jet liner flying over the Mojave desert).
Wanting to beat Evel Knievel's October 1975 record of jumping 14 buses, The Human Fly decided to attempt to jump 26 yellow school buses (some say 15 might have been enough). As it was the 1970's this jump also took place during a break in a disco themed concert that featured Gloria Gaynor (I Will Survive wasn't released until October 1978 but would have fitted in quite well here). Reports say he cleared around 19 buses on a modified Harley-Davidson but crashed and had to be stretchered away. The number on the last bus on the cover above is also 19. Other than his real name being Rick Rojatt and that he might have previously worked in a sausage factory there is still mystery about The Human Fly.
