Let’s Talk About Pokemon - Farfetch’d
083: Farfetch'd
Huh, it never dawned on me that Farfetch'd is the series's very first single-stage Pokemon. It looks especially lonely there after all these Pokemon that have a proper evolutionary family.
Farfetch'd's (???) state is just unfortunate. It has mediocre stats, it doesn't evolve, its ridiculously rare to boot. It'd be this close to winning the award for most forgettable Pokemon, but I've seen quite a number of people throw Farfetch'd some love. Though I'm not sure how much of that is because they're a fan of Farfetch'd, or if it's out of pity.
And it's not like Farfetch'd's (How the hell do you apply the possessive 's to a name like that?) design is bad in any particular way. Its pretty standard issue as far as anime ducks go. And it has the shape consistency down with its little leek, that it uses like a sword. You'd think that alone would lend it evolution potential, as something like a leek samurai. The problem with them seeming to be ditching adding evolutions to past generation Pokemon is that a Mega can't really save Farfetch'd, at least if they're going to stick by the +100 BST rule.
Farfetch'd is a little more of an oblong origin behind it. It's more than just a duck, it's based around the Japanese proverb “A duck has come bearing green onions.” Which basically means that an event is extremely unlikely, but extremely fortunate, since duck is apparently delicious with onion. Hence its English name being “Farfetch'd” as well as its rarity. It's also a cute little subversion of the phrase. Farfetch'd comes bearing onions, but it'll kick your ass with said onions.
It makes me wonder what other proverbs and common sayings you could base a Pokemon around. I know there's already a handful of them that aren't Farfetch'd, but we'll get to them as we get to them.
Personal Score: 6.5/10
I bet a Pokemon based on “Snug as a Bug in a Rug” would be cute as heck
