Wood and metal clink as they leave the table.
"How fascinating."
Calloused fingers skim the bony upper ridge, examining the subtle layering around the curve to where it finally tapers to a point. Even as it shivers like the faintest of anticipation, deftly does the carver plot the course over haphazard knicks and scratches.
The knife, featherlight, traces invisible lines until they are no longer so vague. Once a miniscule scrape, threaded into a flinch. An assessing pause follows, then an experimental slash. A wince.
A hollowing.
A whimper.
