i like the way french flexes at my throat. flows out from deep within, some unknown part of me put into the light. english sits comfortably in my mouth, in my belly. the shape of it so familiar it narrates my dreams, spells out my past. chinese spills between my teeth, trips from my lips like a staircase. all rising hiss of breath, dipping cant of the tongue. something rich. sign language slips between my fingers like thread, invisibly woven. i’ve never known someone so intimately as when i hold their name in my hands. as when i pantomime their being.
