Fantine Happy
Probably my favorite chapter title so far.
Fantine asks Madeleine where Cosette is. The doctor tells Fantine that her child is there, but that Fantine needs to be completely cured before she is allowed to see Cosette.
Fantine tries to be calm so the doctor will think she is well enough to see Cosette without agitating her condition, but she can’t stop asking Madeleine questions about Cosette.
A little girl is playing and singing outside Fantine’s window. She hears the child and thinks that it’s Cosette.
Suddenly, Fantine’s face fills with fear and she falls silent. She points behind Madeleine.
It’s Javert.
Brickclub 1.8.1-1.8.2
I’m back! For those who don’t follow me, I had a midterm to write, and had to divert all my concentration to that. Plus I’m US-based, and it has Been A Week over here. I will try to go back and retrobrick the rest of Arras, but I make no promises, because the trial stresses me the heck out.
But we’re not here to talk about Arras, we’re here to talk about Fantine. Poor Fantine who is being lied to by everyone around her. And I know, I know why they’re doing it, and I can’t even say it’s wrong, but it’s still a little heartbreaking. She’s been through so much and now the people she trusts are lying to her about the only thing she cares about.
(Of course, who knows what seeing actual little Cosette would have done to her. She clings so hard to the idea that Cosette is doing better than she is, that Cosette is happy, that all her suffering was worth it. I think realizing that all her suffering was for nothing, that the Thenardiers just abused Cosette regardless of how much money she sent, I think that might actually have killed her.)
So Madeleine returns without Cosette, and insists on going to see Fantine anyway. This is noble, but it does deepen the lie. As Simplice says, if he had stayed away, perhaps even left a letter explaining that, I dunno, he’d run into some carriage troubles along the way and was going to be delayed, they would have been able to just keep lying by omission. But he wants to see Fantine.
And, of course, unlike Simplice, we know where he has been and why he so urgently wants to see her: this may be the last time he is able to see her before he’s rearrested. He has to know that Javert only needs to find out what happened and get back to M-sur-M in order to arrest him. So his options are to stay away, go to Montfermeil and hope that he makes it there and back, and probably not see Fantine before she dies (and hope that he can provide for Cosette before he’s rearrested), or go see Fantine first and at least do that before figuring out the rest.
So he goes to see her, without Cosette, and Fantine tells him that she’s been watching him all night, wreathed in a halo of light.
(Sidenote: this is the actual sentence: “You were in a halo of light and you had all kinds of heavenly figures around you.’" And I love that sentence because it implies that Fantine’s delirious visions might actually have been true. We’re told in the courtroom that Valjean’s presence is a shining, dazzling light in the obscurity of the case. We also know that Valjean is finally at peace with God when he chooses to step forward. ‘You were in a halo of light and you had heavenly figures around you’ is a not inaccurate way to describe what Valjean was doing in that courtroom at the end. (Sidenote to the sidenote: does this mean that God Himself is part of this plot to lie to Fantine? Or do the visions come from some other source?))
There are more mysterious acts of providence here. The doctor comes in right in time to prevent Madeleine from having to answer directly about Cosette. The child playing in the courtyard assuages Fantine’s doubts at just the right time. The world really does seem determined to keep Fantine in the dark about Cosette up until the end. I guess it’s up to us to decide if that’s compassion or cruelty. I think Hugo would call it compassion. For myself, I’m still undecided.
But all of Valjean’s anxieties prove to have been accurate, because only a few hours after his confession, definitely not enough time to have gotten from Arras to Montfermeil, it’s Javert!
1.8.2
I have been avoiding thinking and writing about this chapter, because this is one of the chapters which hurts me, with Fantine being temporarily happy, knowing that Madeleine- who is once again surrounded by light symbolism in this chapter, has returned and she believes most importantly, that he has returned with Cosette.
Madeleine rushes to Fantine’s side since he doesn’t have time. He knows that his good fortune in not being arrested immediately at Arras cannot last long, Javert will surely be at his heels soon, and he must see Fantine and assure her that everything is fine. I wonder if his visit to her is more out of guilt at seeing her first before going to fetch Cosette, because I don’t know if he would have had time, but maybe he could have gone straight to Montfermeil, instead of rushing to Fantine’s side.
There seems to be questions of ethics and morality being under discussion in this chapter, with Sister Simplice acknowledging that they would not be able to lie and the mayor agreeing that God will help them figure something out. I know why they, especially the doctor are keen to lie outright to Fantine and it being morally supported by the narrative.
I’m not sure however that the doctor talking down to Fantine very much as if she is a child still is useful, even if she is ill - I wonder if this is how people have generally treated her throughout her life from her childhood.
Valjean and the doctor, very much think that Fantine’s whole life is sustained at this point by the news of Cosette and anything else is fatal, but everyone gives her the illusion that Cosette is here and in good health but she must get better first. Providence is helping Valjean keep the secret for much longer so that Fantine can remain happy in ignorance until the end, because the shock will affect her health for the worse, but my heart is breaking for her all through this chapter, because we know that Cosette isn’t here and Madeleine will not have time to fetch her (I still want an AU where Fantine and Cosette are reunited and Fantine does end up teaching Cosette how to read).
Fantine’s visions about Cosette are heartbreaking, she thinks Cosette is there with her, she has been disappointed on so many occasions in her life that she really needs this to be true, and that makes it worse for me, as does her chatter about Cosette’s communion and trying to figure out Cosette’s age.
For now, Fantine is happy and delirious at the same time, eager to see her daughter and impatient that she is being kept from seeing her. I wonder what Valjean would have told her if they had not been interrupted by the child’s voice outside, which Fantine mistakes to be Cosette.
Not surprisingly, Javert appears at the very end of the chapter and Fantine is struck deathly pale at his appearance.
