“Little Boats”
Castiel x Candy
Oneshot

The golden summer’s shine cast over the luscious park grass. Candy thought it felt almost homely, the way the grass lay against her fingers. The way it slipped through the spaces between them, she wiggled her hands around, letting it brush against her tips.
Raising his eyebrows, Castiel placed his hand on his hip. “What are you doing?” He said with a smirk, as he watched her feel the earth beneath them.
Candy almost matched his image. A single raised eyebrow, only with a warmer smile reflecting his. “Enjoying the warmth of the grass.”
“Ah.” He said, nodding and fiddling with a little white sail. “Well, you should enjoy finishing your boat. After all, it’s an experience for young minds like our own!” Castiel stated, clearly mimicking the principal’s speech hours before.
Shoot.
Candy had almost forgot about the tiny boat she was supposed to be assembling, completely. Almost like the sunshine had whispered sweet nothing’s into her ear. Convincing her that it was completely fine to waste the day.
“Just lay down. Don’t you just love the warmth? Have a nap.” She was almost certain it would have spoken.
Sighing slightly, she continued to try to attach her own little sail. Although after a few minutes of messing and succeeding, it was only natural that Candy became…
Distracted.
She blinked in the distance. She had almost forgotten that other people were here, as she was consumed in her own little world, but of course, at the School’s “Minute Boat event” the whole school was scattered all over the park.
Sitting on top of blankets of their own, Candy saw lots of familiar faces enjoying the sunshine, before a noisy scene took her attention.
An innocent child was trying to fly a polka doted kite. Scampering feet going as fast as they could along the cut grass.
“MOMMY, MOMMY! LOOK WHAT I CAN DO!” She squealed.
Candy smiled, the child tugging her heartstrings as a reflex.
She didn’t know what made her look towards the right. She could have looked left, but she didn’t. She looked straight to the right. Perhaps it was just fate.
Leigh was looking at Rosa.
Wait. Maybe that was an understatement. He was staring into her soul, telling her that he loved her with his eyes. Any words he could say had nothing on the way he was looking at her.
Candy blinked. She suddenly felt a certain emptiness inside her. She didn’t quite know why, as she continued to fix the pieces of her little boat together.
“You okay?” The words almost were disregarded by Candy, becoming just as lost as her mind was. Luckily however, Castiel was loud enough.
As her gaze set upon him, she saw his eyebrow was raised, but not to his usual cocky reputation. As if he was generally curious to whether she was or not.
She managed to shine a smile at him, assuring him she was. Although she never felt as dirty as she did at that moment, shining him a smile as fake as plastic.
It was around the time she had finally secured her little blue sail on tightly that the thought crept into her mind. Rather sneakily.
“…Why doesn’t Castiel look at me like that?..”
She tried her best to push it right to the back of her mind. Along with her most embarrassing moments, and the sadder moments of her life.
But it kept re-surfacing. Demanding to be heard. Demanding that she find out.
Darn her stubborn heart.
Always wanting answers whether she had ‘em or not.
She had seen Castiel looking at her before. Sometimes when she glanced at him in class, or when she saw him from across the room.
But she couldn’t explain it. She couldn’t explain how deep down, she felt like the way he stared, was nothing like the way Leigh did.
A stare that held affection, care.
She bit her lip, thinking hard. Having thoughts clog her mind until it became too overwhelmed. She brushed a stand of hair from her face, and spoke. “Hey, wanna put our boats on the water?” She asked upon seeing Castiel’s boat finished.
She didn’t know how long ago he had managed to complete it, or at what time he decided to go onto his mobile phone, the fact that it only took him a split second to put it away made Candy assume that he had been waiting a while.
Kneeling upon the soft grass, they both placed the little boats in the river together. Side by side, they travelled along the river’s movements harmonised, almost as if they had somewhere to be, together.
“Pft.” Castiel said, running his fingers through his hair. “This school has some weird events. What is even the point in this? It should have been a minute boat race.” He stated his opinion light heartedly, finishing with a slight chuckle.
Candy breathed lightly, mesmerized by the two boats floating on the clear, steady river.
“I think it’s relaxing…” She said gently, still completely absorbed by their two boats. They just kept side by side, sticking with each other, no matter what little disturbances the water threw at them.
At some point, one boat was pushed back by a gush of water, and at that point the boat in front started to slow down, as if to wait for it.
And once again, they were off on their little journey together, to wherever.
Candy smiled gently, although had quickly realized she must have spent a few minutes just staring at the boats. She almost turned around to apologize to Castiel for her lack of attention.
Almost.
But a crimson red in the water caught her attention. At first she thought it was something in the water, but as her eyes darted towards it, she quickly realized it was their reflections.
However, as she looked more carefully, her heart started to beat faster. Like a caged animal banging on a zoo fence.
She wondered how long she had been staring at the boats for.
or rather...
Just at what point Castiel started staring at her.
Not just staring. Staring would imply aimlessly looking at something, maybe even daydreaming right through said person.
No, all of Castiel’s attention was focused purely on Candy, and the smile that was plastered all over his face was a mixture of happiness and passion. One Candy had never seen before. But there was no doubt that it was caused by her.
That was it. That was the stare.
One that promised she was the one on his mind before he went to sleep. The very same that confirmed that his heart had a little piece of her with it.
The very one that she had been wondering about.
A stare that whispered he was in love with her without using any words.
Castiel was oblivious to the reflection in the water, or the fact that Candy had seen the smile he kept only to himself.
He kept looking at her as she revealed a smile of her own he had never seen before. One showing a full set of teeth, with a certain sparkle in her eyes that could not be created on its own.
Castiel laughed. “You enjoying the boats that much, huh?” His usual smirk and eyebrow raise set in motion.
“Yeah. I think…” She bit her lip.
She was silent for a few moments before finishing her answer.
“That I just realized how deeply I have fallen in love with boats.”
And as they sat near the river for the rest of the afternoon, with the welcoming sky smiling down onto them, they finished the evening off side by side.
Watching the boats drift off together into the sunset.

I BET THAT, the next morning Castiel ends up wondering why Rosa is laughing far too loudly every time Candy mentioned that she really, really liked boats. x3 Oh also, I was REALLY Tempted to name this drabble “A Ship Setting Sail.” x3
Anyway, I hope you enjoyed this little story! I sure enjoyed writing it! : D Whose ready for writing promt “Dust” With “Nathaniel” Tomorrow? o3o
