10 mark essay questions AS anatomy and physiology
Taking a look at the AS level Specification for anatomy and physiology and comparing the past exam questions from 2009 to present, I noticed to regularity of the use of the same parts of the specification within the 10 mark essay questions.
Below is an example of a 10 mark questions based on the Skeletal and muscular system section of the specification.
The two questions are extremely similar and the answers are nearly identical.
If a similar question was to be asked again on this part of the section, the answers would undoubtedly be the same. Therefore, learn these answers and write yourself a 'Perfect Model' answer.
Question: Critically evaluate the effect of an impact sport and a repetitive action sport on the skeletal system of a young performer
Specification: Evaluate critically the the impact of different types of physical activity (contact sports, high impact sports and activities involving repetitive actions) on the skeletal system and muscular systems (osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, growth plate, joint stability, posture and alignment) with reference to lifelong involvement in an active lifestyle
Positive effects on skeletal system
Increased bone density - this thickens the bone helping to prevent injury
Can help prevent osteoporosis - which is reduced bone density or mass
Increased health or stability of joints - ligaments and tendons around joints strengthen
Reduced risk of osteoarthritis - articular cartilage thickens which helps to reduce friction between bones
Improved posture and alignment - increased strength of core stability muscles eg. multifidis
Weight maintenance - can put less stress on skeletal system
Negative effects on skeletal system
Increase risk of Osteoarthritis
Increased risk of Growth plate injuries or growth plate damage
Can lead to overuse or chronic injuries
Can lead to impact injuries
Injury can limit or stop participation or lead to forced sedentary lifestyle
Question: Discuss the positive and negative effects on the skeletal system of young people performing: Contact sports, High impact sports, activities involving repetitive actions
Stronger or healthier bones / increase in peak bone density or calcium deposits
reduced risk of osteoporosis
reduced risk of damage to growth plates
Healthier joints / increase in thickness of articular cartilage or hyaline cartilage
reduced risk of developing osteoarthritis in later life
stronger ligaments - increased joint stability
better lubrication of synovial joints
decreased mechanical strain on joints due to exercise helping to manage weight as part of an active, healthy, balanced lifestyle
Increased risk of damage to articular cartilage which can lead to osteoarthritis in later life
Increased risk of ligament being stretched or torn / sprain which will decrease joint stability
Increased risk of damage to growth plates or immature bone. The growth plate closes towards the end of adolescence. E.g. Tom Daley - limited number of platform dives a day
Increased risk of an impact or acute injury / break or fracture. e.g. Wayne rooney - metatarsal
Increased risk of overuse or chronic injury
Increased risk of inflamed bursa
I will be posting an example of a 10 mark answer for these 2 questions soon.
