So, I am a part of a writing group irl. At the end of the meetings, we have a few exercises where we are given prompts and have to write as much as possible for 10 min straight. I’ll be posting those here.
I hope to use this space as incentive to look back at these things, maybe they will spark some ideas or lead to stories being continued and fleshed out.

I hummed the theme song of Bonanza to myself as I made my way to the barn at the other end of the ranch. It wasn’t a large ranch by any means, but it was mine. I bought it cheap from an old man called Willy who seemed in a rush to sell. I wasn’t about to look a gift-horse in the mouth, so I said “fuck-it” and jumped in with my eyes closed.
So far, it’s been about 20 days and I think I like it. I looked up at the sky and took a deep breath before placing my hand on the barn door. The wood was hot of course, the day was already well on its way to being a scorcher. I took the key from my pocket and unlocked the chains on the barn door.
Inside was dark, not much light came through the slats. The barn was in excellent shape, far better shape than the house. I closed the door behind me and heard sound of a foot scrape across the floor and a breeze as something passed close to my face.
I sidestepped left and raised my hand to block the fist I was expecting next. But it didn’t come. Instead, I heard the shuffle of feet as someone shuffled and back and away. A light flared and I shaded my eyes and the unexpected light blinded me.
I blinked a few times, trying to focus on who was in front of me. There was a sharp pain across my face and my head snapped back. I staggered back a few steps and fell to the floor, errant bits of hay stabbed the palms of my hand.
Been doing a 10 minute writing exercise. My goal is everyday, but I’m not there, but I’m trying! Its just to let the pen flow and write whatever. It can be i have to write for ten minutes over and over. Somewhere along the lines of those ten minutes, I really get going and I’ve been finding ten minutes goes by fast! And I need more than 10 minutes to finish what on my mind!
