Wagering Time
I was talking to a friend of mine about how I’ve found that I’m usually not interested in playing games on weekdays. I told him that, but didn’t provide an upfront explanation of why, and his response was enlightening. He pointed out that you’re gambling on fun with certain games. As you jump into an online match of a competitive shooter or a MOBA, you’re wagering up to an hour of your time that you’ll enjoy the experience. If you lose that bet, it hurts.
I’m much more likely to make those bets on the weekend, when I have more time to wager and haven’t already been flattened by the construction machine that is the workplace. On Mondays, there’s almost no way you’re going to go get me into one of those games. On weekday evenings, I’m most likely to engage in low fun yield activities that have a low time commitment required and have a near zero percent chance of resulting in unfun.
Looking at activities as if I’m betting time on gaining enjoyment from them has opened up a new perspective for me. I guess the next step is figuring out whether or not I think bet my time too carelessly or not carelessly enough.
