“Alright, fine, I’ll pick you up. Just this once.”
“You mean like physically? Because as interested as I am to see how far you can carry me, I was kinda hoping for your bike.”
“I feel like I’ve been chewed up, spat out, and run over repeatedly.”
“Sounds like your average Wednesday.”
“i can still remember the good times.”
“Yeah,” said Danny, looking briefly over the lip of the bridge and into the water as if he could find them playing there on repeat. The murky still surface of The Pond reflected only the sky back at them, his own face distorted by a ripple of wind, or the fact of being dead and gone. It was almost winter, and it had to be windy and cold out here in the open. He wore a long, thick black coat over a heavy, ribbed sweater and tucked his hands deep into his pockets in lieu of gloves, as if he could still feel the change in temperature.
He frowned down at his reflection and turned back to Sara with a gentler expression.
“But you were the one who said ‘we still share meaningful moments’.” His lips turned up a little at each corner. He took a hand from his pocket to gesture around them: at the water, and the bridge, and the sky. Nature hummed a quiet rhythm around the wind, tucked away from the clamor of city life. “So let’s make the most of it.”
[Text] You’re the first friend I’ve met who hasn’t told me I’m weird then blocked my phone number
[ text ] Honestly, Pez? That’s kinda sad.
“If you tell me, it’ll go away. That’s what my dad always told me and it’s never failed me.”
Funny. That’s what I tell Mikey and Una, too.
I dunno, Pez. It’s just… this whole thing with Gallo’s got me rattled. There’s all these pieces – Gallo, you, Maria – that seem to add up to one clear picture and turns out, you put them together and you’ve got three completely different puzzles. And–
You’ve been acting…different lately, is all.
[Text] I like how I can ask you how to spell poltergeist and you don’t question it
[ text ] I'm not the department spelling bee champion for nothing.
[ text ] ...okay, so we don’t have a department spelling bee.
[ text ] BUT IF WE DID, I would be the champion. Just so you know.
[Text] We should do something normal like play tennis together
[ text ] I just want you to backtrack for a second.
[ text ] Us. “Normal”.
[ text ] Also, tennis?
‘close your eyes and hold out your hands.’
“If you put something slimy in them, it’s going down your shirt.”
