Interesting choice to have Dean kill a dude who cheated on his wife after he spouted red pill misogynistic talking points (and calling him a loser to boot!) when the episode opened on Dean beating up a bouncer who was trying to stop him from harassing a stripper. 🤨 Mixed messages much?
It's kind of embarrassing how obviously chicken the writers were about showing Dean as anything but a hero. With the above, they get mild anti-hero at best. I don't understand what they were worried about. This would be the time to write something dark and "get away with it" because he was a demon at the time! I mentioned this in the author's notes of the 10x01 entry of Every First Time, but it's worth repeating: Dean was the prized protege of Alastair, the Grand Inquisitor of Hell, and he was that before going black-eyed. All they have him do in the first three episodes of season 10 are drink, sing karaoke, threaten people/beat people up, and go to strip shows—all things he does normally! The only thing mildly out of character was killing a guy, and lets be real, that dude was literally going to Hell anyway. Either commit to the bit or write something else, because this entire demon outing was a waste of a good idea and a waste of time.
P.S. I also want to point out Dean was totally going in to kill the wife before deciding to annoy Lester instead. Killing them both probably would have been the most interesting writing choice: show him as totally out of control (giving Crowley a reason to turn on him) but also hint at his surviving human side by making it clear that he killed Lester on the wife's behalf instead of just because Lester sucks. Dammit, I should have written this show!
