Family fun in Fremantle
There are 80 kilometres of sun, sea and sand to be enjoyed along Perth’s stunning Sunset Coast, and the amazing weather, beautiful scenery, great facilities and uncrowded beaches make it an ideal destination for every type of traveller. Getting around by car is both easy and fun thanks to the excellent road system, and most places are also accessible by bus, train or bicycle. We’ll be looking at four of the region’s most iconic beaches, and we challenge anyone not to fall in love with these sandy treasures.
Which beach: Cottesloe
Best for: Couples
Cottesloe Beach, or ‘Cott’ for short, is one of Perth's premier summer locations. Its pristine white beach is great for swimming, snorkelling, and surfing, and it boasts a huge selection of cool cafes and restaurants. But it’s the beautiful, elevated grassy areas overlooking the beach, and the shady spots under the Norfolk Pines that make it the perfect destination for loved-up couples to picnic and laze the afternoon away. Round off the perfect romantic day with a delicious Mediterranean dinner at Barchetta as you watch the sun go down over the Indian Ocean. Those who prefer sophisticated beachside fare should check out the beer-battered fish and chips with champagne pairing offered by Cott and Co.
Which beach: Scarborough
Best for: Groups of friends
The long Scarborough beach is a vibrant hub of activity, with white sands and uninterrupted views stretching all the way from Fremantle to Hillarys. It’s the perfect place to visit with a group of friends, as you can spend the day sunbathing, surfing or getting into some beach cricket, then head to the new retail and dining precinct along The Esplanade for some re-fuelling. The foreshore comes alive at night, with options such as award-winning Matisse Beach Club – great for post-beach drinks; and The Squires Fortune, serving up flavoursome craft beer. During the summer, enjoy live entertainment at Western Australia’s only amphitheatre on the beach, and if you’re lucky you might even catch the Australian Surf Lifesaving Championships in action.
Which beach: Hillarys Boat Harbour
Best for: Families
Hillarys Boat Harbour is the perfect place for a fun-filled family day out. The kid-friendly beach, resort style shopping and excellent selection of cafés and restaurants make Hillarys the ideal entertainment hub. Not only that, it is also home to the amazing aquarium AQWA, an underwater journey along the coastline of Western Australia; and the exciting fun park The Great Escape, one of Western Australia's leading tourist destinations. There’s fun to be had for every age, with everything from waterslides to mini golf, trampolines and a 6D cinema. Hillarys is also the perfect jumping off point for joining a whale watching cruise, going deep sea fishing, or catching a ferry to Rottnest Island.
Which beach: City Beach
Best for: Everyone
It’s no surprise that City Beach is a regular winner of Western Australia’s prestigious 'Best Beach' award. As the closest beach to Perth, its white sand and excellent facilities make it perfect for a day trip which will please every member of the family. There’s fishing, safe swimming, and in the beautifully landscaped area above the beach are recreation areas with a children’s playground, BBQ pits, picnic tables and an outside shower. At the end of the day, head up to the sand hills to enjoy some great food and live music at Clancy’s Fish Pub as you drink in that spectacular Indian Ocean sunset or zip off to Odyssey Beach Cafe for some modern-Australian fare and equally bewitching views.
