Saturday afternoon I was walking home from 12 fest while many people were still arriving there. Now don't get me wrong, I got a lot of high fives and people saying "you're going the wrong way". But for TWO miles out of the THREE it took to walk back, I was walking alone. And during those two miles, I lost count of how many men yelled to me "show me your tits" or "dayyyuuuuum gurl" or other vulgar things that I just don't feel like posting. Yeah, I know. It was a fest and everyone was drunk. But that does NOT make it okay! I know we've all seen posts about cat calls so I won't continue to rant the same thing about how awful it is or about how I'm not some animal, I am a human being. Because, as wrong as it is, basically I'm used to this by now. How awful is that?!
But what bothers me the most is the during my last mile, my friend Brad met me and walked me home the rest of the way. And not ONCE. Not a single time did anyone cat call me when I was with him. As if having a man in my presence somehow makes me less of a target. As if a man's presence is powerful enough for other males to back off. Because they can't respect ME as a human being, they can only respect me when there is another male with me. We got high fives and "WOOOOH"s and a bunch of stuff like that, but not ONCE did a man try and degrade me while I was walking with Brad.
