The earliest sketchbooks to make it through to us intact are those of Pisanello, who was probably born in Pisa – which had close links with Florence – in 1395. Bound up into a single volume called the Codex Vallardi, his strikingly beautiful pages, now resident in the Louvre, show how essential a sketchbook had become.

Stele rubbing from the great mosque in Xi'an

This modern rubbing was taken from a stone stele erected in 1406. An imperial decree of 1393 by the first emperor of the Ming dynasty announced special privileges to be granted to Muslims in China. These included the freedom to travel and to practice their religion:

"That two mosques be built in two different places.... That they be allowed to repair the mosques without hindrance, should they fall into ruin."
