Coronavirus vs Democracy

It is sad that in times like these many people follow their leaders with trust and pride. How can a democracy vote to give all power to one man? Viktor Orban is Europes newest authoritarian leader. He rules as of recently as the only man in charge. He was granted full power to find quick measures against Covid-19 and to hopefully end the pandemic in Hungary. There are arguments to be made to support his actions as he has shown effective measurements against crisis before. However I want to go back to my first question. How can a democracy vote to give all power to one man? Have we not learned from our past. Orban has been granted power to solve the pandemic with the argument that he will return power to the parliament once that has been achieved. But no time-based renewal clause has been put into place, Orban is now ruling indefinitely. How can a democracy agree to a promise, an abstract idea, a lie and give their power away for ever? It is essential that we remain critical. It’s easy to be obedient, staying locked in at home and to point a finger at other countries saying “at-least I don’t have it as bad as them”. Don’t do this. Stay active in your communities, watch carefully what people are doing. I know that the news are loud right now only talking about corona and trump. Dig deeper and find out what is happening. In times of crisis many people can do things that a democracy would never allow. We’re distracted and obedient to our governments. Make sure you’re still a free citizen once this whole situation is over. Tolerance to events now is nice but democracy in a few months would be nicer. Speak up & be conscious Illustration by me I did not want to talk to much about Orban as I am not fully educated with his leadership abilities and biases from the last 10 years, but from reading many articles it becomes clear that Orban is not only going to be fighting the corona virus with his newly gained super power. Hungary and Europe are in big trouble of creeping authoritarianism and suppression.
