I've been reading 1491 New Revelations of the Americas Before Columbus by Charles C. Mann. I haven't finished yet, but I think I can safely recommend it anyway. He draws on archaeological sources and the few precolonial written records that exist, as well as early accounts by European conquistadors, and goes nation by nation painting a beautiful picture of what North and South America were like before the arrival of conquest. He does a great job of dispelling common myths and misconceptions spread by the United States. Although he has made one error in the first 75 pages - he says that all native countries fell to conquest, but the Mohawk remain sovereign in their original territory (plus there are some people in the Amazon I think that would be news to.) Still I wholeheartedly recommend his book.
Have you read 1491: New Revelations of the Americans Before Columbus by Charles C. Mann (2005)?
