Final reflections on this 911 eve. . . May we never forget the lives that were lost and the impact that they had on all of us who in some way, big or small, made the decision to honor the fallen with our own service and sacrifice for this great Nation 🇺🇸📷 @911remembrance ・・・ - Abruptly, at 9:59 a.m., an ear-splitting noise shook Lower Manhattan. The South Tower rumbled, seemed to list in one direction and then began to come down, imploding upon itself in a fury of flying concrete. A plume of smoke reminiscent of an atomic bomb rose upward and then descended to street level and sped uptown. People began running, chased by the smoke. The air rained white ash and plaster dust, coating people until they looked ghostlike. People held their breath or covered their faces as best they could with cloths or their shirts. For several blocks, everything was black. People found their eyes burned. Many wondered if they were seeing the very face of death. Ten or so blocks north of the Twin Towers, the smoke had been outrun and it began to dissipate into the air. People stopped, turned and looked downtown. As the air cleared, an unthinkable site presented itself. It was the empty space where a 110-story skyscraper had been just minutes earlier. People gasped. They trembled. They sobbed. "It can't be," an elderly woman said as she fell to her knees on Chambers Street. "It just can't be. Where did it go? Oh, lord, where did it go?" #16YearsLater (at New York, New York)
