The Boys of Momma Dukes [NaNo pt. 8]
The day continued in silence.
Savannah had stumbled back to Momma Dukes in a sort-of trance, stepping around Frankie's body with as much distance as he could. He ignored Dodger's hand and climbed up onto the bus, walking back to the seat that he had claimed with multiple colored Sharpies, falling onto the bench with a heavy huff.
Mia stood in her tent, her sobs now as silent as the rest of the bus. She rocked slowly back and forth in the fetal position, her eyes fixed on her bare feet. Her body trembled and her teeth chattered, but she didn't notice.
The Australian took it upon himself to make sure the group kept moving, now minus one member.
–
“M-Mia...” Savannah's voice broke from his throat in a heavy tone coated with sadness in the pale stillness of the new morning. The girl barely lifted her eyes too look at the boy in front of her door. “...n-nevermind.” He turned and started back towards the back of the bus, his steps heavier than Mia was used to hearing.
She crawled to the front of her tent and peeked out in time to see Savannah ready himself to climb down the ladder, a full backpack on his shoulders. “Savannah?”
The girl stood and ran to the back just as Savannah's feet touched the tar of Interstate 64. She followed him down the ladder and stumbled when she landed.
“Savannah!” She tripped and dropped to her knees, an inappropriate word jumping from her mouth. She pulled herself up, watching as Savannah stopped and looked back to her. “Wh-where are you going?”
“I have to go, Mia.” His voice was just as heavy as before, but his eyes joined the sadness.
“What are you talking about...?” She whined, looking at his backpack.
“I don't know.” He shrugged. “But I can't stay.”
“Savannah, what are you talking about? Of course you can stay.” She took a step towards him. “We want you to stay.”
“I can't.”
“Why not?” She demanded, her voice rising in slight panic.
“Mia...” He walked back to her and took her hands, looking her in the eyes. A silence wrapped around the two in the form of a cool wind. The hair tossed around by the wind caught on their eyelashes and tickled their faces, and Mia pushed hers away. Savannah stood still, watching the girl before him as she fought tears. She was so tired of crying.
“Savannah... please...” She tilted her head up towards his. “D-don't do this...”
“I can't risk it, Mia... I was with Frankie when he got infected... I'm not going to hurt you like he did.” He shook his head. “I wouldn't be able to live with myself.”
“But you're not infected!” She whined, leaning closer. “You would have freaked out and showed it when Frankie did. You're not infected!”
“But what if I am and it's just taking me longer to react?” He shook his head. “I don't want to take that chance, Mia. I'm sorry.”
“Savannah...”
“Dodger,” He looked passed Mia and to the Aussie who had joined them. “Take care of her, okay?” The man nodded and shoved his hands into his pockets.
“Savannah, no, please...”
“I love you, Mia.” The girl stopped and stared at him, her mouth falling open. “That's why I can't stay. I love you too much to hurt you, or even risk hurting you.” He gave her a sad smile. “You're my princess. Nobody hurts my princess. Not even me.”
“I don't want you to go...” She choked out in an itty-bitty voice, her lip quivering. “Savannah, please!” She cried out louder. “Please.”
“Get back in Momma,” His eyes were wet and fixed on hers. “Get back in there and drive and don't stop. If you stop, I'll want to get back on, and I can't. You know I can't.”
“Savannah...”
“Take care of yourself, Mia. Promise me you'll do that.”
“Please, don't...”
“Promise me, Mia.”
“I-I promise...” She bit her lip, lowering her head. “I will...”
“Good.” He placed his hand on her cheek and leaned close, pressing his lips to her forehead. She gasped and couldn't stop the hot liquid from escaping her blue eyes. He closed his eyes to fight them from doing the same.
They stood for a while, their bodies close, but their hands laced together. Mia cried, and Savannah tried to stay strong, but his resolve was fading. Eventually, Dodger took her hand and led her back to Momma Dukes. She reluctantly climbed the ladder, glancing back to the boy in the street. His eyes never left her.
Dodger closed the door behind him and latched the locks behind him. Mia leaned against the window, her hands pressed to the glass. Savannah lifted his hand and opened his mouth to protest, but the roar of Momma Dukes starting up again silenced him.
The behemoth started to roll away, and Mia started to scream his name. She pounded on the glass, her sobs getting louder. Savannah watched her, his heart breaking at the sight. As the beast accelerated, the California boy started towards it. His steps became quicker and faster until he was running after the bus as it approached the horizon. He didn't bother to fight his own tears now, chasing after them.
Before he was ready for it, the bus disappeared from view, and Savannah's feet stopped moving.
