Game Boy Colour - 18sense.
7.4 out of 10
Rappers and video games always seem to go hand-in-hand. Just check out Spin's take on it. This notoriously nostalgic disease seemingly struck Connor Delaney (18sense.) while he remained dormant concocting beats. The white Southern Californian returns with his second mix tape of the year, Game Boy Colour.
Similar to The Spaceship EP, Delaney flourishes his affinity for smooth lounge jazz in the first three tracks, consisting of piano and trumpet loops. It's a classy gentlemen under tone with modern day swagger serving as the main course. Delaney made an emphasis on making satisfactory beats before returning to the mic, as he points out on "UnamedCurrently&Forever", in which he also questions how much credibility hip-hop really gives him. "GameBoyColour" appropriately gives an 8-bit flavored background to the nostalgic album cover. "Grab this bitch's sweater let them flow 'cane like Cobain be blow brains" becomes Delaney's anthem and another hip-hop tribute to the grunge king in "RepeatedOften". As the tape progresses, the beat switches more to a heavy dose of tambourine and drum loops. "Quitbitchin" is as close to Odd Futrue as 18sense. will get too with a series of violent tales over discordant piano loops. Yet, Delaney still gets lost in his love for early 20th Century suaveness as displayed in "SilentFilms." as he preaches "Stay silent, stay humble." When it's all said and done, Delaney throws down eighteen samples of underground suburbia and subdued proclamations.
The biggest question may lay on how to classify 18sense. more than how his material measures up. As a white college student, there isn't much of a "Rep your 'hood" pedigree to look to; not that he wants anyone to anyways. Unlike lovable geeks like Watsky and Macklemore, Delaney struggles to choose whether he wants to be an old school gentlemen or a boastful suburban kid. The backdrop of GameBoyColour is one of nostalgia and hesitancy to reach for something bigger. It's about growing and deciding how he wants his 20s to be defined as most college students fumble with. Being a beat maker may be Delaney's forte for now because his words only show pulled punches... for now.
