Rhythm, movement and intuition are palpable in Emilio Perez’s Fluxus / Rythmus (2019) at the 18 Av (N/W) station on the Sea Beach Line in Brooklyn. Combining the spontaneity and expressiveness of painting with the immediacy and graphic qualities of drawing, Perez’s swirling paintings were translated into 22 glass mosaic panels by Mosaicos Venecianos de México, who captured the detail and kinetic imagery of the original layered paintings. Fascinated with the forces of nature, Perez captures the energy of the station’s location and its people through the use of a vibrant palette and the ever-flowing movement of painterly forms, which intuitively reflect the flow of the transit system as a living organism.
