Some years ago, I was required to fly to Mexico for a work event. I applied for a Mexican visa and got --  surprisingly -- a one-year multiple-entry visa. The flight the office wanted to book had a transit through the US, and as per US requirement, I needed a transit visa if I’m passing through, even if I never actually leave the airport. 

For reasons that are still not clear to me, my US transit visa got denied. I tried to find another flight to Cancun from Kuala Lumpur that was within budget and didn’t fly through the US, and there was none. Zero. Basically, I ended up not going to Mexico. I still haven’t been.

A single country, essentially, has the power to decide where I can and cannot go, even if I have no plans of going to that country.

I thought of this incident last week when I read about the Huawei ban. To me, it seems ridiculous that a multi-billion dollar company would be crippled because a single country decided not to do business with it. If that’s not a shameless display of America’s big imperialist dick, I don’t know what is. 

Or -- I don’t know -- maybe this is just another thing that can be filed under Shit Al Doesn’t Quite Understand.
