Il 2018 ha segnato la fine del centenario della Grande Guerra, un anno importante per riflettere sulla coscienza storica europea e italiana. Ma la fine delle commemorazioni non deve porre fine al lavoro storico di ricerca e alla trasmissione della memoria. La Grande Guerra, giorno dopo giorno: 9 Agosto 1918, il "folle volo" su Vienna Sono le 5:30 del mattino quando, dal campo di aviazione di San Pelagio, vicino Padova, decollano 11 monoposto SVA . Uno di questi è stato modificato per ospitare oltre al pilota, Natale Palli, anche il poeta soldato Gabriele D'Annunzio. L'obiettivo di questa ardita squadriglia è la capitale nemica, Vienna, un idea su cui D'Annunzio riflette dal Settembre 1915. Nel frattempo il progettato bombardamento si è trasformato in qualcosa di diverso, un'azione di propaganda, non verranno infatti gettate bombe ma volantini. Degli undici aerei partiti, sette riescono ad arrivare sull'obiettivo, sganciando 40.000 volantini con un messaggio in Italiano scritto da D'Annunzio - ritenuto intraducibile in tedesco - e 350.000 volantini con un messaggio in tedesco scritto da Ugo Ojetti. I messaggi incitano il popolo austriaco alla resa. L'impresa, al pari della Beffa di Buccari, è un grande colpo di propaganda. Nella foto, i volantini vengono lanciati su Vienna. Their objective is the the enemy capital: Vienna. The airplanes are single-seater but one has been modified to host not only the pilot but also the soldier poet Gabriele D'Annunzio, who planned the raid. After a flight of 1200 km, 7 airplanes reach the Austrian city where they do not drop bombs but leaflets: 40.000 copies of a message in Italian - considered to be untranslatable in German - written by D'Annunzio and 350.000 copies of a message written by Ugo Ojetti and translated into German. The messages incite the Austrians to surrender. It's a huge propaganda success for the Italians and for the Entente. In the picture, the leaflets are dropped over Vienna.

La Grande Guerra, giorno dopo giorno: 19/09/1918 La battaglia di Megiddo, l'annientamento delle armate turche

Il piano per la battaglia di Megiddo, combattuta tra il 19 e il 25 settembre 1918 e che porta alla definitiva sconfitta delle forze turche in Palestina, nasce interamente dalla mente del generale Allenby, comodante delle forze britanniche.

L'operazione viene descritta dallo storico militare Basil Liddell Hart non solo come "una delle campagne più rapidamente decisive e insieme la più completamente decisiva battaglia di tutta la storia" ma anche come "uno dei capolavori della storia militare per grandiosità di intuizione e di attuazione".

Grazie a un uso magistrale dell'effetto sorpresa legato alla superiorità numerica delle forze alleate e all'uso dell'arma aerea e delle forze irregolari degli arabi di Feisal guidati da Lawrence d'Arabia che assaltano la linea ferroviaria di Hejaz che da Damasco correndo verso Sud costituiva l'unica fonte di rifornimento per le armate ottomane, in pochi giorni le armate turche in Palestina cessano di esistere. La strada per Damasco e per la fine della Grande Guerra sul fronte mediorientale è aperta.

The Great War, day by day: 19/09/1918 The battle of Megiddo, the annihilation of the Turkish armies

The plan for the battle of Megiddo, fought between 19 and 25 September 1918, sprang entirely from General Allenby's mind.

The operation is described by the military historian Basil Liddell Hart not only as "one of the most quickly decisive campaigns and the most completely decisive battle in all history" but also as "one of history's masterpieces by reason of the breadth of vision and treatment. If the subject" Liddell Hart adds, "was not a difficult one, the picture is almost unique as a perfect conception perfectly executed".

Thanks to the surprise effect linked to the numerical superiority of the allied forces, the use of air forces and the irregular Arab troops of Feisal led by Lawrence of Arabia, which assault the Hejaz railway line that from Damascus running southward was the only line of supply for the Ottoman armies, in a few days the Turkish armies in Palestine simply cease to exist. The road to Damascus and to the end of the World War 1 in the Middle East is open.

La Grande Guerra, giorno dopo giorno: 8 Agosto 1918, inizia la battaglia di Amiens, è il "giorno nero dell'esercito tedesco" secondo le storiche parole del generale Ludendorff. Le truppe alleate, composte principalmente da australiani e canadesi, già nella prima giornata avanzano di 12 km. Il morale dell'esercito tedesco è seriamente scosso. L'attacco alleato segna inoltre l'inizio dell'"Offensiva dei 100 giorni", la fine della guerra è vicina. Non però nella mente dei generali alleati che sono convinti che la guerra sarà decisa nel 1919, se non nel 1920. Ben 420 carri - di vari tipi - furono usati durante l'attacco, essendo però mezzi ancora non affidabili la maggior parte di questi viene messo fuori combattimento quasi subito. La Grande Guerra, giorno dopo giorno: 4 Luglio 1918 La battaglia di Hamel L'azione, ideata da John Monash, Comandante delle truppe australiane, consiste in una perfetta integrazione tra artiglieria, forza aerea, carri e fanteria. L'attacco, che si svolge nei pressi di Amiens, è condotto dalla fanteria australiana e americana, con il supporto di 60 carri britannici. Per tenere nascosta la presenza dei tank viene ordinato agli aerei di volare sopra di essi per coprirne il rumore. L'attacco, proprio per l'uso coordinato delle diverse armi, è da molti considerato come la prima battaglia moderna.
