Futurama (1999-2013)
A man is frozen and wakes a thousand years later. He makes strange new friends who help him become accustomed to his new life.
The comedy in this series works well because there’s a variety of characters to draw from, not just in the sense that they all look very different and are of different species, but because they are of different economic classes, have a wide range of interests, and overall act very dissimilarly to each other. This makes it easy to create satire which can sometimes be nicely subtle and other times are comical in its crudity and obviousness.
Between seasons 4 and 5 some films were released to keep the series going after it was cancelled for a while. These are good when watched as complete films but they sometimes used to come on television in sections so that they had the length of regular episodes and that didn’t work well because the channel they were on cut them up randomly without cliff-hangers. The films also try to drag out the drama over a longer time which isn’t necessarily as successful as the usual format.
The emotional moments and episodes make the comedy feel less trivial and allows the characters to develop as well as being entertaining and that makes this series a lot stronger. There isn’t always narrative consistency but it still references the stuff that doesn’t make sense which somehow defuses the discontinuity. There are also many references to films, TV series, and other forms of culture which are both fun to spot and help set up familiar plot lines.
Some of the episodes, particularly series 5 when the series is trying to find its rhythm again, don’t quite conclude properly which can feel disappointing. The later series also introduce a more regular gay character who is just a stereotype and doesn’t even seem to be a satire about anything. There is sometimes a deviant episode in which the usual narrative is completely abandoned to see the characters in other styles or situations and this can either be interesting and mildly amusing, or it misses its mark and ends up irrelevant.
6/10 -Just a cut above average-
-In the first episode of the series, under the title it says “In color”. When the series returned after being cancelled, the first part of the episode is in black and white.
-Leela’s full name is Turanga Leela, a reference to a 1948 symphony called “Turangalila” which can be translated from Sanskrit as “love song”.
-Alternative titles considered for the show were “Aloha Mars” and “Doomsville”.
