Chapter 11
"I think I'm going to invite Jenni" – confided a quiet Harry, laid down in his bed, while his best friend read some book.
"I'm not going to pronounce myself about that subject" – grumbled the blonde boy without taking his eyes off the book.
"Who are you going to invite? It can't be Lizzie..." - Harry sat on his bed and his emerald eyes fixed on the other Slytherin boy.
"No one."
"That's impossible. You need to have a pair to go!"
Niall rolled his eyes. Harry didn't shut up and Niall was losing his patience.
"C'mon, Niall. Tell me!" - whined the taller boy, with green eyes full of expectaction.
"For Merlin's sake, Harry!" - Niall snapped, closing his book, anooyed with Harry, himself and the world – "I'm not taking anyone to the ball! Get over it!" - he turned around and hid himself under the dark green covers, ending the conversation.
That wasn't quite true, though. Niall Horan was taking someone to the ball but he didn't want to talk about it. Merlin, he felt like he wanted to disappear in the second he was told with whom he was going.
It all started in that morning, during breakfast. Niall was next to Harry and Lizzie, who was reading her gossip magazine. Harry was babbling about the Ravenclaw girl, as usual. The boy didn't shut up about that. Niall didn't even bother to listen the speech he had already heard a thousand times before, so he just looked over the High Table, where McGonagall and Dumbledore talked to each other.
He was distracted but as if noticing someone staring at him, he looked behind his back and found her eyes. Her blazing eyes burning his soul. She was mad at him, he knew it by the frown in her forehead. He just didn't know why. She had started a duel with him out of nowhere, so it wasn't like he had done something to enfuriate her. It was something he would never understand in her: her mood changes. It was too difficult to understand her. She quickly looked away when she found out she was busted, and from far, Niall could see the pink shade appearing on her cheeks. He was not indifferent to her and he smirked, thinking in the opportunities he would have to mock her due to that little detail. Yet something inside him trembled, but he just decided to ignore it. She was still something to have fun, nothing else.
"May I have your atention, please?" - Dumbledore, the headmaster, pronnounced, receiving every students' attention to him – "Due to some rivalries between Houses, I have decided to organise a ball" – he announced clearly and distinctly. Some excited whispers appeared, but they all disappeared when the old Headmaster hit his spoon on his glass, in a delicate move – "However, this ball as a few particular rules" – more whispers, this time more confused than excited – "As it is organised to deep the bond between the four Houses of Hogwarts, this ball, as from now on will be called Bonding Ball, has a rule about the person you may take with you as your companion. Your companion must not be from your House. Students whose companion is from the same House, will not be allowed in the Ball. The Bonding Ball will have place here, at the Great Hall, next Saturday. On Wednesday there will be carriages to take you to Hogsmead in order to choose a suit or dress for the special evening. Now, time to finish breakfast for a nice day of classes" – and with that said, Professor Dumbledore sat back on his detailed golden chair and continued an animated conversation with Profesor McGonagall and Professor Sprout.
The idea of a ball caused an enourmous amount of whispers in the Great Hall. Everyone was excited about the ball. While the boys were talking among them about which girl they would ask for a date, the girls were already deciding the dresses and hairstyles.
Niall found that all ball scene quite boring. He didn't want to invite any girl. They were all so boring and so plain. There was none who could possibly awake an interest in him. They were very loud and all they cared about was the cover of the magazine and the poster of that excelent band that was pretty famous in the Wizard World. So no, he didn't have any interest in girls. Perhaps he could not go, he thought. A disappointment for most girls, but balls were boring, especially Bonding Balls. He had better things to do...
Potions class was as easy as always. He had already done the Polyjuice Potion before. Many times before that class, actually. It was easy for him and his blonde head, but his colleagues looked like they had a troll in front of them and didn't know how to knock him out. And the fact that he had to hear Harry ramble about his Ravenclaw introvert girl was not on his top ten of favourite things to hear. He preferred The Wizards or Wands n' Roses. Not Harry rambling about that girl. There he was doing his potion and watching his friend staring at the girl who was apparently oblivous to what was happening behind her back.
Niall sighed. He needed to get out of there. However, he couldn't act all dramatic, like he had done in the class before. Snape had lectured him, threatening him not to do such thing again or his father would be called to school. And Niall was sure he didn't his father at Hogwarts. But the class was boring and he needed to get some fresh air, he needed –
"Severus, may I take Horan with me?" - Professor McGonagall's head appeared from behind the door of the dungeon, every head in the classroom turned to her.
Snape nodded not very pleased and Niall followed the Transfiguration Professor, intrigued and relieved. He silently followed her and when they stopped at one classroom that wasn't hers, he was even more intrigued. When Samantha McKellar appeared next to him, his curiousity was almost eating him alive.
They stared at each other, with fire in their eyes. A point of curiousity in her maybe. None of them said a word. They wouldn't dare. Not in front of the most feared professor, apart from Snape, of course. It was like a death line was set in with that stare. You could feel the spark, the tension...
If Professor McGonagall noticed, she didn't make a scandal. She just ordered the two students to follow her. They did it as they were told and silently walked behind her, following her through the labirintic gothic halls. Their hearts sank when they saw her whispering the password to the staircase that lead to the Headmaster's office. Both Niall and Samantha gulped in dry, Niall's heart beating hard against his chest, almsot as if it was going to tear apart his ribs. Bad things were coming...
The pair of students climbed up the stairs, leaving Professor McGonagall behind, and stepped in the round room, whose walls were covered with books and cabinets full of the most strange objects, magic or not. They stood in the middle of the room, looking for the old man with white long beard. The great Albus Dumbledore was nowhere to be found.
A sound near the desk full of letters and ink and feathers caught their attention. Shyly, Samantha stepped foward and looked at the the little round plate full of ashes. She gave one more step to have a better look and saw a little red head of a bird. She gasped in surprise by the vision of the tiniest and yet most beautiful creature she had ever seen.
"Fascinating creatures, Phoenix are" – the voice of the Headmaster scared her, making her stumble back, which caused a collision with Niall, who had approached too.
They looked at each other angrily, walking away from each other, but continued hearing Dumbledore's words.
"They rise in ashes and turn to ashes in their Burning Day. Fascinating!" - he exclaimed falling in silence while staring lovingly at the little phoenix that cleaned its feathers. The man is a lunatic, Niall thought, quickly regretting having thought that because he remembered very well the day his father told him how capable Dumbledore was of reading minds.
Neither Niall nor Samantha knew what to do in that silence, though. Should they ask what they were doing there? Should they just wait? Was the Headmaster going to take long before talking to them? Or was he going to keep it short and simple? What was Dumbledore thinking?
"Erm... Professor" – Niall cleared his throat – "What exactly are we doing here?"
"Ahh, yes, yes!" - Dumbledore exclaimed, getting out of his transe – "Come closer, children" – he made them a sign to walk closer – "I've been informed of your constant arguments, Miss McKellar and Mr. Horan. I do not want to hear whose fault it was. I just want to find a solution and to resolve a problem like this it takes action from both parts. It was with you two in mind that I had an excelent idea: the Bonding Ball. As you know you must take whoever you want to the ball of another house. However, that particular rule won't be aplied to you. You can't decide with who you're going. I must tell you now that you, Mr. Horan, will be taking Miss McKellar to the ball" – he said all this with extreme calm and patience. However, after hearing what they had just heard, Niall and Samantha were everything but calm.
"Excuse me, professor" – Sam was the first to react – "The idea of the ball really is excelent, but if I may say, I hate Horan and I'm very sure I won't be going with him to the ball" – she smiled a bit, as if trying to convince the Headmaster.
"But that's the principal objective, Miss Mckellar! You need at least to tolerate Mr. Horan! And that's the point of the ball. To create bonds between people of different Houses."
"My father won't allow it! Me, the heir of the Horan family, going to the ball with some girl without pure blood! He will definitely come to the school!" - threatened the Slytherin boy.
"Your father will always be welcome here, Mr. Horan. But I must warn you, if you don't go with the rules, by the time your father makes me a visit, you both will already be expelled" – Dumbledore stared at their eyes intensely, piercing their souls with the profound blue eyes – "Now, if that's all" – he reclined back to his chair and both students took that gest as their moment to leave.
Both lion and snake left the Headmaster's office in silence. Once they were back in the hall they both looked at each other, intensely.
"I'm not taking you to that stupid ball!" - Niall hissed, indes finger straightly pointed to the Gryffindor girl.
"No one asked you to, snake" – she spat, turning her back at him and walking in his opposite direction, never stopping cursing him under her breath.
He ran after her and grabbed her arm, forcing her to look at him.
"That doesn't mean I won't take you elsewhere" – he whispered in her ear, quickly dragging her to the nearest empty classroom.
And that was how they both missed their afternoon classes...
"Niall!" - the blonde boy was violently shaken, getting out of his momentary transe – "Niall, are you listening me?"
Niall rolled his eyes. Harry could be really enervating, especially in at night.
"Yes, Niall, I'm listening..." - he feigned a smile to the curly haired boy, who smiled back, completely unaware of the blonde's boys unpleasant smile.
"So, do you think Jenny will accept being my date for the ball?"
Niall sighed. His friend was head over hills with that Ravenclaw girl. Expectant green eyes stared deep into his blue ones and Niall couldn't help but sigh again and nodding, much to his friend's happiness.
However, even after being told that, 'yes, the girl will go with you to the stupid ball', Harry didn't stop talking about how her chocolate brown hair fell perfectly on her shoulders, how her eyes smiled when she talked about something she loved or how that smile she had only for him made him like her even more.
Eventually it reached a time where Niall just tuned out of that one-sided conversation and fell asleep, with a certain brunette in his mind.
can you please I mean pleeeeaaasseeee post new chapters soon?
I suppose you’re talking about IHTILY, and I’m glad to inform you that I’ve started revising the last chapter I’ve posted. I’ll write a bit more tomorrow and I’ll try my best topost in Monday. Sounds good?
I feel so bad for not writing or updating like every week, guys :c I know some of you are waiting for an update of Strange Love, IHTILY and even Impossible or Unforgettable Summer... I have been stressed out because of school and before I wrote in every class, but now the pressure is on me anc I can't do that anymore. And during weekends is doing homework, essays and study for tests... I'm feeling terrible now, because I never liked those authors who uptaded once in a million and I'm turning into one of them. Plus, I seem to have lost all my imagination and creativity. I can't write something I like and even if I force myself to do so, I don't like the final result and I don't want to present something I don't like to you.
But summer holidays are almost there and hopefully I'll find the strenght to continue my fanfics. Until them, I hope you keep following me and not lose faith, because believe me when I say I love to write, and eventually I'll finish what I have started :)
