[Play] is also a super important part of my relationship with Camila. She’s the most playful, spontaneous and ridiculous person pretty much all of the time. Sometimes we slip into these odd characters with full blown accents. Awhile back, we went into full Harry Potter mode for, like, literally 45 minutes. I want you to picture like method acting level Harry and Hermione while the two of us are in the kitchen making dinner. That kind of thing keeps the day at a higher baseline level. […] When you find that playmate, that person you can be a total goofball with, roll up in the sandbox and hang on to them. They are rare in this world.

Camila and I had been best friends for about five years when we finally decided to try actually dating. Over the years, this connection sort of sprang up between us gradually - this closeness. So we decided to follow it and that meant we needed to step outside of the usual boundaries of a relationship and try something different. We decided to go on a date. I was insanely nervous. I wanted everything to go perfectly so I had all planned out: a driver to pick us up, a reservation booked at an Italian restaurant in LA and a table on the back room set aside. So the car arrives and we get in. The two of us are in the back seat and I’m embarking on one of the most intense experiences of my life: going on a first date with my best friend. The car pulls out and there’s just silence for a couple of minutes. Neither of us know what to say and there’s this anxious energy in the air. My self talk is writing all kinds of different storylines and in all of them this date ends in disaster. ‘What if we don’t have anything to talk about? What if it doesn’t work out and it completely messes up our incredible friendship? What if we go into kiss and it’s weird and we throw up into each other’s mouths?’ I look over at Camila and I can see she’s going through the same thing. Almost at the exact same time, we turn to each other and say, ‘Listen, I’m gonna need about 30 minutes just to breathe right now’. That deflated a lot of the tension. We both loosened up and we ended up spending half an hour in the car just breathing in and out. Just kind of being with this moment. Instead of fighting the experience of being anxious, we sat with it. Breathed into it. Since that day, ‘breathe into it’ has kind of become a motto in our relationship. We use it when we’re anxious before big performances or facing anything that’s really uncomfortable or overwhelming. It’s like a reminder to come back to the breath and be with whatever you’re experiencing.
