Spanning five centuries, the V&A's Fashion collection is the largest and most comprehensive in the world, containing thousands of objects full of fascinating details – many not visible to the naked eye. Since 2016, we've collaborated with artist Nick Veasey, a specialist in the field of X-ray photography, to unlock some of the secrets of this collection through the illuminating mode of X-ray. Nick custom built a mobile X-ray studio, enabling us to capture high-quality X-ray studies of key objects – including a pair of 18th-century English stays, a denim jacket customised by Leigh Bowery and several couture garments designed by Cristóbal Balenciaga.
