CFS: Taiwan Plane Crash

TransAsia Airways GE235 passenger flight crash-landed into the Keelung River, Taipei. One of the plane's wings cut through a highway railing before impact. The ATR 72-600 was carrying 58 passengers and crew on board. It plunged into the river right after take-off. 23 have been reported killed, with about a dozen others still unaccounted for. Science: Neanderthals and Humans

A 55,000-year-old skull unearthed in a cave in Israel has lead researches to believe that Neanderthals and Humans lived side by side. Based on uranium-thorium techniques, the skull dates back 54,700 years. This shatters the theory that humans evolved from Neanderthals. It is the first fossil evidence indicating that modern humans and Neanderthals inhabited the area around the same time during the late Pleistocene. Until now, there have been no Homo sapiens’ fossils from the Middle East corridor during the pivotal time after modern humans left Africa, but before expanding into Europe and Asia.

World: Revenge From Jordan

               After a propaganda video surfaced from ISIS/ISIL showing the burning of a Jordanian pilot, Jordanian authorities have launched 56 airstrikes on the terrorist group, claiming to have only targeted weapons depots, training centres and military barracks. Jordanian officials vowed to harshly retaliate for the slaying of the pilot, Lt. Muath al-Kaseasbeh, who was set ablaze while trapped in a cage. The general said about 7,000 Islamic State group militants have been killed since the beginning of the coalition airstrikes, without elaborating. Nation: Foreign Defense Minister

John Baird has resigned this past week as Canada’s foreign defense minister. Former Liberal MP and one-time NDP provincial premier Bob Rae describe Baird as being “bombastic, mean spirited, vicious, eloquent, generous, smart, cantankerous, hardworking, ingratiating, effective, human”. John Baird was named foreign affairs minister in 2011, and has held the post longer and with more success than any of Stephen Harper's previous ministers in the role. Although the exact reasons for his departure are unclear, this news come to us only a week after Baird and his convoy were pelted with eggs and shoes in Palestine. City: Second Round of Winter

               Toronto and the surrounding GTA are under a freezing drizzle advisory. The city’s medical officer has also issued an extreme cold weather alert. This has also triggered a number of additional services for the homeless, including the opening of two 24-hour warming centres. The city of Toronto was hit with 5 – 10 centimeters of snow just this Saturday, so it’s shaping up to be a very cold business week.
