For the absolute novice who wants start spinning music right away, his/her options are either plenty or limited depending on what type of budget he/she is working with. Of course, if money was not an issue they could skip the controller setup and go for a pair of CDJ variants with a matching mixer – but keeping cost down and going for an all-in-one machine is desirable for many. Only a laptop and a DVS would be required in this setup.
Let’s assume the VCI-400 is completely out of reach. Vestax has also given us two flavors of a scaled down controller, the Spin and the Typhoon. Both are pretty much the same in terms of functionality, in the $300 range, and are capable of being used with the iPad and Algoriddim’s djay software.
The second version of the Spin (Spin 2) has gotten the most attention this year at the BPM 2012 show and is said to be the first piece of hardware designed to connect natively to an Apple device (iPad/iPhone). This is really what sets it apart from other 2-channel controllers in the same competition. There has also been word that a cloud sharing cross-platform library will be integrated into the software.

Whether or not this is something DJs will gravitate towards is a question that will be left unanswered until its arrival. Naturally, the price has gotten updated too and this might not sit well with folks who are entering the game, but with Mac’s iOS 6 update there is something new to look forward to.
