McLaren builds 20,000th car

A 600LT Spider has marked a production milestone for the British supercar specialist, eight years since its first car was assembled in Woking.

McLaren Automotive has celebrated a milestone this week, with its 20,000th car rolling down the production line at its plant in Woking, UK.

The commemorative vehicle was a right-hand drive McLaren 600LT Spider (pictured), finished in Chicane Grey.

It’s been eight years since the first McLaren Automotive model – an MP4-12C – was produced in July 2011, with the company recording an annual output of “just over” 4800 units in 2018.

McLaren says it expects volume to remain around 5000 cars per annum into the new decade, increasing to 6000 units by the end of its Track25 business plan in 2025.

“Achieving our 20,000th car built is an important milestone for McLaren Automotive. Last year we hand-assembled just over 4,800 cars and we plan to maintain around 5,000 cars a year for the immediate future,” said Mike Flewitt, CEO for McLaren Automotive.

“While demand for our products continues to grow, we aim to balance that to maintain exclusivity for our brand and our customers.”

“It is fitting that we celebrate this achievement with a 600LT Spider which has been a huge success for us with all production slots for the coupe variant now sold out,” he added.

Since a second production shift was introduced in 2016 to meet rising global demand, the Woking facility doubled its output from 10 vehicles a day to over 20.

Now, more than 90% of vehicles hand-built at the site are exported to more than 32 markets around the world.
