It was our first visit to the US and New York City. We stayed at the "American Dream Hostel" near Flatiron for $40 or something per night on bunk beds (because we were poor ass students), but then got kicked out after complaining about the bed bugs (instead of getting an apology from them). This guy in the card just threw our luggages down the stairs and we had to find a new place in the middle of the night. I felt attacked and was scared to the core, but then my brave friend MJ convinced me that 'we should stand up for our rights' and go back to the hostel to get our prepaid nights refunded - which we did. So there they are, our triumphant four 20 dollar bills.

The following year, MJ became a diplomat to 'stand up for our rights' in a greater sense. 7 years later, I got my masters degree and a job in New York City so I don't ever have to sleep on hostel bunk beds.

I guess our (American) dream did kind of come true, after all.
