KURNUGIA-PLAGUE WINDS
I hope you all are watching my middle finger rise
To the bullies in the school yard,
I know I'm on your mind
Now you say you love me
But what about before?
When I was just that silly little girl next door, ooh-ooh
Ooh-ooh-ooh-ah-ah-ah
THE INFERNAL SEA-SKINWALKER
DEATH KARMA-DARK OMENS
Burial - Rough Sleeper
Hey there, remember me? Yeah, it's Aubrey. Sorry for the disappearance, but I'm going to do my best to try to be more present in 2014.
So for the first time that I can remember, I haven't got my best of the year list put together AT ALL. There was a LOT of great music released this year, but it felt to me like it was a year of great SONGS. I'm having a hard time coming up with 20 full albums that I feel absolutely in love with. This is very hard for me!
I missed a lot, and it's crazy how much of the music released this year that I forgot about really hit me deeply.
London DJ, Burial, released some intense EPs in the latter half of this year, Truant/ Rough Sleeper and Rival Dealer. The two EPs combined give us 5 new Burial tracks. Admittedly, my Burial listening has been limited to his self titled release and his collaboration with Four Tet a couple of years ago. I remember liking Burial well enough, but these two latest EPs are like an aural supernova. There's so many stages to each of the tracks (the one above is 13 minutes), it's like some beautiful symphony but comprised of beats, organs and samples.
Is this what Dubstep is? Cos wikipedia lists burial as "Dubstep" and "Hyperdub." What I know of dubstep nowadays, it is in no way as ambitious and orchestral sounding as what Burial has done. To categorize this as Dubstep may be accurate (hell if I know the history of his DJ roots), but the state of what I understand it to be today makes me think that it's an insult to this kind of music. Think of how many people would stick their nose up at my suggestion of listening to this?
The first time I listened to these EPs I was left in some sort of state. I had to take some time to process what I had just listened to. One song could take you from a very dark and evil place to a sunny field with flowers in the span of ten seconds. It's MANIC, but there's something comforting and lovely in that mania.
Hey, I just described my life. I think that's probably why I became so quickly and deeply obsessed with this release. -a

I'm glad to hear this band wasn't just a one hit wonder, been waiting to hear the rest of this EP for a while now. Go check it, it's fantastic. Some reason they seem to remind me of Motives.
