This movie of asteroid 2014 JO25 was generated using radar data collected by NASA's 230-foot-wide (70-meter) Deep Space Network antenna at Goldstone, California on April 19, 2017. When the observations began 2014 JO25 was 1.53 million miles (2.47 million kilometers) from Earth. By the time the observations concluded, the asteroid was 1.61 million miles (2.59 million kilometers) away. The asteroid has a contact binary structure -- two lobes connected by a neck-like region. The largest of the asteroid's two lobes is estimated to be 2,000 feet (610 meters) across. Asteroid 2014 JO25 approached to within 1.1 million miles (1.8 million kilometers) of Earth on April 19. There are no future flybys by 2014 JO25 as close as this one for more than 400 years. The resolution of the radar images is about 25 feet (7.5 meters) per pixel. 154 images were used to create the movie shown. Radar images of asteroid 2014 JO25 were generated and collected on April 18, 2017, by NASA's Goldstone Solar System Radar in California's Mojave Desert. At the time, asteroid 2014 JO25 was 1.9 million miles (3 million kilometers) from Earth. The asteroid will safely pass Earth at a distance of 1.1 million miles (1.8 million km) on April 19 at about 8:24 a.m EDT (12:24 UTC).

Asteroid 2014 JO25 NASA, JPL-Caltech, Goldstone Solar System Radar
A day before its closest approach, asteroid 2014 JO25 was imaged by radar with the 70-meter antenna of NASA's Goldstone Deep Space Communications Complex in California. This grid of 30 radar images, top left to lower right, reveals the two-lobed shape of the asteroid that rotates about once every five hours. Its largest lobe is about 610 meters across. On the list of Potentially Hazardous Asteroids, this space rock made its close approach to our fair planet on April 19, flying safely past at a distance of 1.8 million kilometers. That's over four times the distance from the Earth to the Moon. The asteroid was a faint and fast moving speck visible in backyard telescopes. Asteroid 2014 JO25 was discovered in May 2014 by A. D. Grauer of the Catalina Sky Survey, a project of NASA's Near-Earth Objects Observations Program in collaboration with the University of Arizona.

El pasado 19 de abril el asteroide 2014 JO25 de aproximadamente 620 metros de ancho pasó a 1.8 millones de kilómetros de la Tierra, unas 4.5 veces la distancia de la Tierra a la Luna, es decir, muy lejos. Es el encuentro más cercano con la Tierra de este asteroide y seguirá muy alejado por lo menos los 500 próximos años.
