Discovery is my favorite thing about music.

I heard a song on the radio yesterday morning that I Shazam’d, and came back to a day later during lunch on Spotify because I wanted to hear it again. Found it exists on the third installment of a mixtape series from a music label/fashion brand called Kitsuné, comprised of a former Daft Punk producer & an architect, that’s been around for over a decade.

I had no idea this existed until today. And now I get to go back and swim through this mixtape, consisting entirely of bands I’ve never heard before and am falling in love with one by one. Then I can hop back to Volume 2, then 1, and rabbit hole myself into a buffet of new artists.

I get sad with the same music all the time. Don’t get me wrong I can dance my ass off to 80s hits til the sun comes up, but there’s something that just makes my mind so much clearer when I’m consuming completely new sounds. There are huge growth spurts that can be pinpointed in new music experiences from mixtapes my cousin made me throughout my teens, entire albums shared from neighbors in the dorms, friend’s randomly making me what I consider the best spontaneous gift you can give, and those of you who post fantastic mixes on Tumblr (I’m talking to you, Seger).

Never stop making mixtapes. They’re really important.
