第86屆奧斯卡頒獎，由《地心引力》囊括最佳導演和多項技術獎項共七項大獎；而最佳影片則是Steve McQueen的《自由之心》，這是好萊塢第一次把最高榮譽授予黑人導演的作品。最佳男主角、男配角則分別由《藥命俱樂部》中飾演患了愛滋病後久病成良醫的 Matthew McConaughey，以及飾演變裝癖的愛滋患者 Jared Leto 獲得，兩人在這部電影中都有相當精采的突破！最佳女主角則毫無意外地由《藍色茉莉》Cate Blanchett獲得；最佳女配角則是《自由之心》的 Lupita Nyong’o 獲得。
這次男女配角得主都是第一次入圍奧斯卡，此外，這次奧斯卡最佳男女主角、男女配角和最佳影片，都與奧斯卡前夕頒發的美國獨立精神獎一樣，這幾乎是影史上第一次發生這樣的重疊。
