It’s been months since the XC Coupe Concept debuted at the Detroit auto show, auto show last Volvo preview of its new 2015 XC90.
But the production model is finally here after years of development, pointing out the future of Swedish car with its scalable architecture of the new product modular engine platform and pioneering family.
The 2015 XC90 brings totally new style, but is still familiar in the front, with the company logo slashing diagonally through its prominent upright grille.
Like the concept, which has T-shaped LED running lights through the fog. The company calls the design “Hammer of Thor”, an evocative name that we think is fantastic. Under this new front is a choice of two powertrains very powerful, but very efficient.
The standard XC90 gets a turbocharged and supercharged 2.0-liter AWD making an impressive 316 horsepower. Or if buyers want to be a little greener and more powerful, is the Twin XC90 Plug-in Hybrid with the same engine, but augmented with an electric motor to produce a staggering 400 horsepower.
The exterior design is cool, if not as sexy as recent concepts of Volvo, but we think the interior is the real star here, with a dashboard that looks like it came from a catalog of Herman Miller and a screen infotainment vertically oriented single integrated into your center console, perhaps following the example of Tesla. If the car feels as good as it looks, we think a lot of sales are going to be won inside.
Volvo is proud of its reputation for safety, and the new XC90 is no different with some new tech. First, there is a protective package road runoff absorbing energy between the seat and the frame that “damps the vertical forces.” There is also an intersection braking system that stops the crossing if it comes out in front of an oncoming car.
Pricing for USA T6 AWD XC90 starts at $ 48,900 and comes standard with luxury features like nav and a panoramic sunroof. There will also be a limited edition of 1,927 First Edition models (the date the brand was founded) that come with all the options and special badges, but have to be booked online beginning September 3 at 10:00 AM ET. The prices of these exclusive vehicles start at $ 65,900.
