Prompt: https://www.pinterest.com/pin/542402348850336405/ The battle was over, but the shouts of the wounded and the dying still swirled around her. Smoke billowed from the tall towers and blood filled her shoes, but none of it mattered as she saw his broken body across a courtyard filled with the dead. Two arrows had pierced his chest, but it felt like two matching ones had pierced her own. She staggered backward and grabbed her heart to keep it from unravelling as she made her way over. Her eyes clouded with pooling tears and her laboured breath rang in her ears. She flung herself down beside him and scooped him into her arms, examining the arrows embedded in his chest. “Oh, gods.” She whispered to herself, looking down into his beautiful face and his sweet brown eyes. She stroked his hair and smiled at him, even as his wheezing breaths rang around her and more blood came up out of his mouth, she continued. “We made it, the battle is won.” He silently reached up and pointed at the arrows that, until now, she hadn't noticed. She took his hand and laid it back down. “Don’t worry about me. We’re gonna get you better first, okay?” He closed his eyes and shook his head,a pained look took over his face. An anguished look. She understood. Too late. Her heart sank into her stomach as more tears pooled in her grey eyes. She released a breath she hadn't realized she was holding and hugged him closer, feeling his warm face, stroking his unkempt hair, he opened his eyes and watched her face as she sang to him softly. He placed his limp hand on hers and smiled. A smile that told her everything would be okay. With that, the life drained from his eyes and the tension in his body released as he went limp. Went still. She curled herself over him and kept singing to him. Her tears mixing with the blood on his face. Her tortured sounds mixing with those of the screams of the soldiers. “I love you.” She whispered to him. “With all my heart and all my soul.” A feeling of emptiness now ran through her veins. Ran through her entire body as she stared at his peaceful face that still had the remnants of that smile. The smile meant for her. The world that they would have made and the future they could have had. All lost in that one smile. In that one face. The one that could challenge any storm and soothe any demons. The face and the smile that she loved. The man that she had loved. The single heart that beat alongside hers now silenced. Leaving hers to beat on without his. She shuddered as the world caved in on itself. As the darkness enveloped her, and she let it.
