Fic Rec Mega Post: Big Bang Special Edition
I’ve spent the last month or so mostly reading the amazing fics and illustrations that were produced for the 2016 Hannibal Big Bang organised by @nbchannibalbigbang / @m-oarts. My conclusion: this fandom is ludicrously talented, it is the actual embodiment of an embarrassment of riches <333333
So, here’s the list of what I’ve been reading. The recs will be slightly shorter this time round, simply because this post would be unmanageably long otherwise. Also, I wanted to make clear, this is not, I repeat NOT in any way a “best of” list. It is a “things wot Vic has read” list. If your fic isn’t on here, it’s most likely because a) it’s a WIP and I don’t rec those on these lists; b) it has an unhappy ending and this delicate flower can’t read those cos they trigger her like daddy kink does other people; c) I just haven’t gotten round to it yet, I’m only human and you guys write so much good stuff I just can’t…
Anyway, here we go, under the cut because this is so long it’d take up the whole of your dash:
(Oh, also, I should say that I haven’t said anything about the artwork that accompanies these fics, because I am a visual moron and the extent of my commentary would be: “Oooooh it’s SO PRETTAY!” Suffice it to say, all the artwork is amazing and beautiful and I’m sorry I have nothing intelligent to say about it.)
I Do, We Do, We Will by @magicbus77 with artwork by @m-oarts: This beautiful piece of “what if?” fic asks, well, what if Will had walked into Abigail’s kitchen when she and Hannibal were staging her death? Answer: Hannibal and Will get married and find themselves trying to figure out whether a fake relationship can lead to real love.
Man Is the Warmest Place to Hide by @fourth-axis with artwork by @hanni-bunny-lecter: I have a serious weak spot for Hannigram/Lovecraft crossovers and this is a fantastic one in which Will suddenly finds he no longer sees the world the same way after Hannibal left him bleeding to death on his kitchen floor. Seriously, all the dogs have vanished, there’s fog everywhere and a rather familiar dead girl won’t stop following him around. This is a fantastically weird and inventive piece of canon divergence, which enthralled me all the way through.
Blood and Feathers and Antlers by @thesilverqueenlady with artwork by @sokuria: Taking the infamous Will Graham/Bambi comparison to its logical conclusion, this begins as a fairly faithful crossover to the classic Disney movie, with Will as the irrepressibly curious young faun. However, the classic Hannibal darkness creeps in slowly but surely, with puddles of blood, ravenstags, and a certain older stag’s obsession all playing a role in this beautiful, lyrical tale.
Five at the Table by @cervolina with artwork by @behold-anempathsdream: The infamous “Having Bedelia for dinner” post-credit scene gains a few more place settings, as old scores are settled, new ones are raised, and Will and Hannibal try to figure out just how this thing between them is going to work. There’s a glorious level of bitchiness and mind-fuckery going on throughout this fic, as well as some surprisingly tender moments between our murder husbands, which makes for a hugely entertaining, compelling read.
Morning Glory by @lunarwench with artwork by @meres-argias: This follow-up to Cheap Motel (which is glorious, do yourself a favour and read!) is a tribute to the best things in life: love, home-cooked breakfast and bottom!Hannibal. Having sorted out their feelings for one another, it’s now time for Will and Hannibal to start pushing some boundaries, in the most pleasurable way… Tender, funny, and ludicrously hot, do not miss.
AGNUS DEI by @slineq with artwork by @tygerandthelamb: In mediaeval England, Will is a hermit, choosing to live as far outside society as possible. His quiet life is complicated, though, when he chooses to shelter Hannibal, an injured, escaped barbarian, from those who would execute him. Featuring that blistering, instantaneous Hannigram chemistry, even through a near-impenetrable language barrier, this is a brief but lovely example of world building, creating something remarkably compelling out of what is, in essence, the two boys sitting in a room and smouldering at each other. Which is what they’re best at, of course.
The Birth of the Lamb by @hollymartinswrites with artwork by @nonexistenz: Say that, in some other world, Hannibal was pregnant by an unknowing Will when he went to prison. Say that the baby was lost. Say that, after the fall, Hannibal becomes pregnant again. How would he cope? How would Will? This is the world this beautiful fic explores, sensitively and movingly navigating the trauma of Hannibal’s mind, and the joy and terror of second chances.
Red Right Hand by @pinkglitterygoth with artwork by @hachiseiko: I also have a soft spot for Hannigram/Night Vale fics (I guess I like it when the murder hubs end up in even weirder ‘verses than their own) so I was delighted by this story, in which Will returns to Night Vale for a very special wedding… and takes a certain doctor along as his plus one. Despite the abundance of strangeness all around (including some rather telling effects on Hannibal himself), this is a remarkably sweet and romantic tale of two weirdos figuring out it’s more fun to be weird together.
Between Conventional Notes by @the-winnowing-wind with artwork by @malchikelf: Bathtime for cannibals in this beautiful little vignette that captures the moment at which Hannibal and Will’s post-fall relationship moves to a new level of intimacy. This perfectly conveys the teasing, aching nature of Hannigram, with the pull between the boys finally allowed to blossom. Truly lovely.
Come Here Often? by @devereauxsdisease with artwork by @meres-argias: Let’s face it, there’s no one in the world Will and Hannibal find more attractive than, well, Will and Hannibal. So what better way to spice up their relationship than to swap wardrobes for the night and roleplay as each other? That’s if they can get past the passive-aggressive bickering, of course (ah, romance). Sweet, funny and a little bit dirty, this is murder husband shenanigans at their finest.
Maybe Ceviche? by @peacheso24 with artwork by @pangaeastarseed: Will Graham has a secret. One he has managed to keep hidden even from Hannibal. But now, after the fall, Will is ready to take another plunge: by admitting that he’s not a man, he’s a merman. Kind of. Hannibal, unsurprisingly, is utterly enthralled. Amazingly, this dark, funny and sexy tale is this writer’s first work - please go and show them some love and enouragement so we get more of this goodness!
Will You Be My Prince? by @hanniscats with artwork by @prettypurpleflower: I am weak, weak, for jealous, possessive Will Graham, and here we have it in spades. When Hannibal asks Will to accompany him to the opera under the pretence of being husbands, Will finds it near impossible to hide the extent to which he wants Hannibal for real. Shenanigans, inevitably, ensue in this lovely, entertaining bit of farce in which Will and Hannibal struggle with their true desires. As usual.
Kiss Kill Fall In Love by @chronicopheliac with artwork by @m-oarts: At the prestigious Chesapeake Academy, scholarship boy Will Graham runs up against the school’s biggest clique, led by none other than Hannibal Lecter. Rich, handsome, and dating queen bee Bedelia, Hannibal can’t help but sparkle (no, literally, he sparkles) whenever Will is nearby and sets about trying to correct his terrible first impression. Written to be, in the author’s words “the fluffiest, tropiest shoujo Hannigram romance ever“ this is gloriously silly and fantastically entertaining.
A Monstrous Proposal by @confusedkayt with artwork by @miraeth: Emotions are hard. Especially when you’re a pair of middle-aged guys (murderers… cannibals…) who have no idea how this whole “love” thing is supposed to work. Inevitably then, when the subject of lifelong comittment comes up (you know, the type that doesn’t involve straitjackets and padded cells), neither Will nor Hannibal cover themselves in glory in this moving, intense and insightful fic.
Strawberry Surprise by @darkdreamsofhannigram and theconsciousdarkness with artwork by @muffichka: How to surprise one’s cannibal lover, a guide by Will “scented lube” Graham. It’s been weeks since Will’s been alone with Hannibal and he wants to make their reunion a memorable one. Of course, this being Will, his plans don’t go perfectly. And, being Hannibal, things rather… escalate. Shifting power dynamics, a bit of manipulation and some seriously hot office sex all feature in this delightful bit of filth :D
Dust by @zacharybosch with artwork by @bashfulwerewolf: After the fall, after he knows that Hannibal will live, Will disappears. Hannibal will not let him go so easily. Both painful and beautiful, this captures the yearning ache of Hannigram and the depths of Hannibal’s devotion to his Will.
Cannibals Are Man’s Best Friend by @thesilverqueenlady with artwork by @mishaminion666: Doctor Who meets Hannigram in this lovely bit of insanity in which it turns out that Will is rather older than he’s been letting on, thanks to a present from a certain madman with a box. The thing is, that living for centuries can get to be fairly boring and so when something - or someone - comes along who can alleviate that boredom, Will finds it very difficult to let go. Even after plunging said interesting person into the Atlantic…
In The Dark Of The Moon by @wraithsonwingsposts with artwork by @shinyfenriz: Where is the line between fighting for your life and making love? With Will and Hannibal, this is always an extremely tricky question. Set against the oh-so-Hannibal backdrop of a ruined church, this is brutal, beautiful and so damn hot. Just like our murder hubs then.
This Is The Way Step Inside by @wrathofthestag with artwork by @x-gubins: It’s cannibal nostalgia story time, kids. Gather round the firepit as Hannibal tells his murder husband all about the time he hunted a skinhead. In a punk club. In disguise. Yes, ever committed to his cause, this amazing fic gives us the truly unforgettable image of Hannibal Lecter in ripped jeans, bovver boots and a bomber jacket. Oh, and a collar. And *whisper it* finding he just might have a taste for the club’s playlist…
You Probably Think This Fic Is About You by @chronicopheliac with artwork by @bracari-iris: If Hannibal’s going to date anybody after the fall, it’s going to be Will, right? Except, what if it isn’t? Anybody think Will’s going to react well to that? Or will he, in fact, throw a massive drunken temper tantrum and make an utter fool of himself? Well, I’m not telling, you’ll just have to go read this amazing, hilarious and very sweet fic for yourself ;D
Truth And Consequences by @ishipthemsogoddamnhard with artwork by @qschoolcandidate: Say Will had done what he should have done instead of being a stupid, dithery idiot and gone with Hannibal at the end of season two. How would that evening have gone if Will had made that choice instead? According to this fic, it would have contained much less angst and bloodshed and much more very excellent sex. Much better all round, right?
Impatience by @evenunevenme with artwork by @cannibalhouse: Slow burn? No way. In this wonderful fic, Will knows what he wants the moment he comes out of the water, and what he wants is Hannibal. All over him :D Of course, there is the small matter of some life-threatening injuries to heal from (not to mention the fact that Will isn’t allowed to speak until Dr Lecter clears it), so the murder muffins have to get a mite creative… luckily they’re good at that…
Breathe Me by @devereauxsdisease with artwork by @chetom: Sigh. If only they would talk to each other. Thus goes the ballad of the Hannigram shipper, brought to beautiful life here with a post-fall fic in which Hannibal picks a fight because that’s much easier than just finding out if Will might be ok with some kissing. Featuring the continuing adventures of two grown murderers men behaving like children because emotions are hard, this is both hilarious and adorable.
Kryptonite by @slashyrogue with artwork by @postmortemdesign: In this amazing AU, Will is the superhero Fathom and Hannibal is his nemesis Dr Psyche. Except… well, things are never quite as simple as that with these two, are they? And it’s not like having superpowers lessens the pull between them - as if anything could - it just means there’s rather more explosions when they get together!
So Much Darker When a Light Goes Out by @lunarwench with artwork by @nonexistenz: After the fall, Hannibal is - somewhat understandably - worried that Will won’t stay with him. So he resolves to give Will as much space and freedom as he needs. Unfortunately, Will doesn’t exactly react well to this and the tension between them builds until, one night, Hannibal does something really stupid… Post-fall angst and emotional idiocy abound in this beautifully written story.
Mythics - Prelude by @bokuno-jinsei with artwork by @hannibalssketchbook: Fancy a bit of epic worldbuilding? Well in that case, this stunning supernatural AU should be right up your street. Will is a hunter of mythical creatures (well, non-law-abiding ones, anyway) who crosses paths with a certain vampire who goes by the name Hannibal. Both men have secrets and hidden agendas, but perhaps they can look past the bad to find the good in each other… Acting as a setup for a larger story, this is both a tantalising glimpse at what’s to come and a thrilling fic all by itself.
A House Divided by @weconqueratdawn with artwork by @m-oarts: It would surprise precisely no one if I said that Will Graham is not great at romance, either giving or receiving it. Nor is he good at managing his feelings for Hannibal. So instead of talking to him (are we sensing a pattern here?), Will keeps a journal in an attempt to remain rational about his cannibal. It does not exactly work. Slow burning in all the right ways, this is a beautifully yearning piece of angst.
The Other Side by @proxy-1 with artwork by @choreolanus: When a cannibal finds himself in times of trouble, where else would he turn but towards his family? Sadly for Hannibal, seeking refuge with Robert and Murasaki doesn’t do wonders for his relationship with Will. Particularly given that Hannibal seems to be remarkably intimate with his aunt, a development Will does not care for, not one tiny little bit. Another very fine entry in the “Will and Hannibal are jealous, melodramatic idiots” genre :D
To the Elysian Plain by @hermaia-moira with artwork by @beezlekn: After his untimely death, Draco finds himself in the underworld, under the care of a strange young man with curly hair and beautiful blue-green eyes. Will acts as the warrior’s guide, offering to take him to Hades in order to bargain for reincarnation. Along the way, enemies are encountered, revelations made and a bond is formed that may have to endure a test spanning many centuries before it is sealed. Fantastically clever and beautifully written, this will keep you hooked all the way to its last, brilliant twist.
When We Belonged to the Sea by @redfivewritingby with artwork by @monobani: Neither Will nor Hannibal survive the fall. Fortunately, with Hannibal resurrected as a flesh-eating (some things never change) Siren, and Will a scientist who gets shipwrecked on his island, their story is far from over. Despite his nature, Hannibal helps Will survive (well, he is ever so pretty) and Will finds himself inexplicably drawn to the strange, half-feral creature who saved him. Of course, everything depends on whether Hannibal can manage not to mess things up this time and, well… he is still Hannibal.
Halley’s Comet by @chenille with artwork by @curiouscanvas: In this surreal but mesmerising tale, Will never reaches the bottom of the cliff and the roiling waters of the Atlantic. Instead he wakes to find himself aboard what appears to be a spaceship, hurtling through the stars and without a soul in sight to provide comfort or explanation. That is, until Hannibal shows up. With the ship failing around them and no way to know if this is real or all happening in his imagination, Will struggles with his memories and his relationship with Hannibal, unsure of whether it would be better to live or to be swallowed by the black hole of space.
*wheezes* Alright, that’s it, I’m done. If there’s any bad links or I’ve mistagged anyone (and I’ve done my best but you know how tumblr is with tagging)… well, let me know but it might well take me a while to fix it after this epic. *collapses*
