the place I work at remodeled these split gendered restrooms into “inclusive restrooms” and never told us what they meant while construction was ongoing. I need you to know every atom of potential criticism or whining that could’ve happened disappeared when people found out this meant we got 10 fully separate private bathrooms with sinks inside. I’ve not heard a single person crack a joke about the inclusive signage. this is the world TERFs are trying to steal from you

This is called a "superloo" and terfs are actively trying to steal this from you, in the UK they changed bathroom regulations to mean new buildings have to prioritise gendered toilets rather than build superloos.

This also upset a lot of architects and designers who like the superloos. They're also typically more like small rooms rather than having doors you can look under.

I have a friend who was strongly against inclusive bathrooms because he felt that “bathroom stalls are already really exposed due to how they’re constructed, so no wonder women don’t want men in the same bathrooms as them” and when I pointed out that we could just… build better bathrooms… with less exposed stalls, he got really quiet and then said “honestly that sounds so much better, but there must be some problem with building them like that, because otherwise wouldn’t we already be doing it?” BESTIE we are. WE ARE. Old-style bathrooms are cheaply made, poorly designed, and all around bad. Haven’t you noticed that men’s restrooms rooms get weirdly sticky? Haven’t you noticed that women’s restrooms end up with giant lines? This is because these rooms are architecturally awful. And we can do better now, because we know more! And we are!!! People are actively designing better bathrooms that address known problems, and guess what: those bathrooms are “inclusive” in the same way that curb-cuts are inclusive. It doesn’t matter if the ramp was built for a wheelchair or a stroller; it doesn’t matter if the bathrooms were designed specifically for gender inclusivity or just because fall-apart-if-you-sneeze-on-them metal stall dividers with giant ass peek gaps suck. We can in fact improve our built environment to better meet our needs. Stop cutting off your nose to spite your face; stop settling for less just because someone else might also enjoy it.

Seattle's SEA-TAC airport has an all gender restroom that's a row of about a dozen fully enclosed separated little rooms that lock, with a shared bank of sinks and it's great. Love it. Lot of very strange encounters at the sinks, feels odd the first few times! But people laugh it off almost instantly. Because it's not actually a big deal to share a sink.

Cultural Insights of Our Own: Lessons From a Newly Decoded Digital Archive

Abstract

The recently decoded Internet Archive includes the digital artifact called “Archive of Our Own” (AO3) from early third millennium Earth.  AO3 is unusually well backed up and therefore is presumed to contain some of the most significant -- perhaps even sacred -- texts of the time.  In this paper we present our preliminary analysis of AO3 metadata, including new insights about the literature, gender and sexuality, religion, and scientific understanding of this historical era: 

I. LITERATURE. We describe the cultural centrality of figures such as the Winchesters and Reader.  We explore how they featured heavily in every dominant literature genre of the era, including Fluff, Angst, Hurt/Comfort, and Oral Sex.  

II. GENDER AND SEXUALITY. We review the overwhelming evidence that male-male relationships were the most culturally significant sexual and romantic relationships, but we also show that it was a culture with an unusually broad set of sexual and gender roles.  In particular, we highlight the unusual tripartite conceptualization of gender as including alpha, beta, and omega roles; we note the apparent prejudice against betas, illustrated in the prevalence of “no beta we die like men” and similar protest slogans. 

III. RELIGION. We describe a newly discovered religious taboo: doves were a common sacrificial animal of the time, but they were forbidden from being eaten.  

IV. SCIENCE. Finally, we present new insight about alternate universes.  While previous scholars hypothesized that the scientists of Earth may have developed a correct early theory of the multiverse by the late second millennium, our analysis of AO3 presents evidence to the contrary.  As late as the early third millennium, prevailing theories postulated highly specific universes, such as a universe in which everyone is in high school, or a universe contained within a coffee shop.  

Taken together, these historical insights show that further investigation is warranted into the valuable documents stored within AO3, perhaps even going beyond the metadata to examine the full texts.

hannibal meta again! its so crazy the way a piece of media can just spin in circles over and over in your head for months years etc while you look at it from every angle over and over and never get bored but GOD damn i love the premise of kaiseki where season 2 starts as a perfect role reversal. will graham in his 1991 silence of the lambs prison setup talking about hearing hannibal’s voice in his head speaking all his thoughts, about to be on trial for hannibal’s murders, forced to play the role of hannibal himself while hannibal plays the role of “the new will graham”, investigating bodies of people who were killed for their skin pulled up out of a river in another silence of the lambs setup, seeing death how he imagined will would see it in such a way that all his dialogue as he puts together this psychological profile sounds like an exact deliberate imitation of will graham’s thoughts spoken in hannibal’s voice. he talks about fucking SILICON FILLED MODEL FISH. hannibal is full of trivia but that’s such a fishermancore reference to make. i fucking LOVE the way they are both so self-aware of being in a theatre where they are playing one another’s roles i love the way that they both use the opportunity to learn more about each other and themselves and find a freedom and control in pretending to be one another. the foil-y-est foils ever to foil

The Betrayal of the Sea (400 words):

In the darkness the huge, magnificent structure loomed over the landscape. Backlit by a moon, the hue of which was a blue that reminded Will of being at sea. He was grounded by the wrought gates before him bearing the Lecter coat of arms.

He was on land, and yet everything before him swam a little as he regained his bearings. 

Water. Was... troubling now. It had always been his friend. Companion. He could work with water, use it, predict it as he sailed. He had trusted it, and himself on it. Did he feel betrayed by it? Yes. But no more so than he felt betrayed by himself. When he had dragged them over the bluff he wasn’t sure if he had fully hoped for death. What he knew he had hoped for was... togetherness. That they would live or die, but together. An end, either way, to the years of violent courtship.
