1. What are your best memories of 2016? Being with Connor again. The first day we got be with eachother again. 2. Did your life change in a big way in 2016? I was sexually assaulted, so yeah.  3. End of Year Book Survey - 2016

I almost didn't do the 7th Annual End Of Year Survey (2016 Edition) because I read so little and I can't even remember half of it thanks (not really) to medical school. But someday, I might regret skipping this year so here's my brief and little-thought-out answers:

We borrowed a still from the famous Wes Anderson essay by :: kogonada to introduce this year's topic of our survey – the audiovisual methods in criticism!

For many decades, film critics were supposed to write, and the few stills or film excerpts released entirely under the control of the producers and the PR served just to illustrate that text, or better yet to promote it. The digitalization of 120 years of cinema brought an immense quantity of moving images at our fingertips. Now we all feel tempted to make screenshots in order to capture a film moment that is difficult to describe, or to curate our own collection of images, often from various titles, or to find a song that plays in different features and in very different context. Some of us do this for pleasure, others – for work.

You can think of this compulsion as a joyful re-enactment of the ultimate Cahiers du Cinéma fantasy to merge critics and auteurs, or as an unexpected take on Andy Warhol's prediction about fame in the future, or as a tribute to Agnès Varda's gleaners, or along the lines of “Walter Benjamin, Roland Barthes, and Marshall McLuhan walk into a bar” – the bottom line is that everyone's doing it, or so it seems. In January 2015, on the occasion of (The Return of the) Critic's Choice, we already introduced the audiovisual essay on our blog together with two of the most active authors out there, both belonging to the field of the the theorists and the practitioners. At this point, our survey aims to find a common ground between the devotees and the unbelievers, this is why we zoom out a little bit searching for answers that can help us see the big picture.
