I hate The Look. The Look. We've all gotten it. The condescending look you get when you tell someone you're an art major. The look of negative shock that you're greeted by when adults ask where you're going to college, and you tell them you're actually not going to college. The disappointed look your nosy-ass aunt gives you when you tell her no, you don't have a boyfriend. The shaming look you get when you tell adults you don't have a job, even though, it seems, all of your peers do. That Look. They're telling you with their furrowed brows and narrowed eyes and tightly pursed lips that you are pathetic, a burden to society. You're not meeting their whacko standards they've, for whatever reason, taken it upon themselves to set for you. As if you don't already tell yourself on a weekly basis how badly you need a job. As if you don't already know what a "starving artist" lives like. As if you're not constantly reminded by your parents what the job market looks like for someone with only a high school degree. As if you don't already feel like an estranged third wheel to your friends who have already coupled up. As if it's their life, and not yours. Whose life is it, anyway?
