In my 2016 era
Who’s the straightest character in the 2016 revival of Falsettos?
If you know and have listened to the 2016 revival of Falsettos, then you know that it’s very gay. The show follows a man leaving his wife and kid for a gay lover, and he has two friends who are a lesbian couple. So that got me thinking: If this show is so gay, who’s the straightest character?
I know it’s dumb, but I have evidence to prove my choice for who’s the straightest character in Falsettos.
Let’s start with Marvin, the show’s protagonist. He starts the musical by telling everyone that he left his wife, Trina, and son, Jason, for a “friend” named Whizzer. Whizzer and Marvin’s relationship is one of the main plot lines in the show, and Marvin states at the end of the show that he never regretted leaving his family for Whizzer. Therefore, Marvin is the gayest gay in the show. We can eliminate him for the straightest character.
Then there’s Whizzer, the man Marvin leaves his family for. Whizzer is played by Andrew Rannells, one of the gayest actors in Hollywood, so it’s hard to think Whizzer’s character is straight. It seems like Whizzer has many relationships with men, and he’s very passionate with Marvin. Plus, he has the best fashion sense. To no one’s surprise, Whizzer is not the straightest character in the show.
Marvin’s son, Jason, may seem innocent, but he is not the straightest character in the show. Early on, Jason is clearly not happy about his father being gay. He even sings a song called “My Father’s A Homo”, where he asks if he could be gay since his father is. We include questioning characters here, and even though Jason is interested in girls in the second act, he stills thinks he might be gay early on. So, Jason is not the straightest character.
Marvin also goes to a therapist named Mendel, who ends up getting together with Marvin’s ex-wife, Trina. While Mendel is played by Brandon Uranowitz, an openly gay actor, Mendel seems very straight. He wears tacky sweaters that Whizzer would frown upon, and doesn’t seem very confident in himself or in his love life. You may be thinking “He seems pretty straight.” But you’re wrong! In one of the opening songs, “Love is Blind”, Mendel mentions that he never married, and he’s never met anyone like Trina. Since he’s never married, he may have engaged in some college experimenting, but we really don’t know for sure. He also says “Work...work is my passion. Or perhaps that’s an alibi.” He may be covering up a previous relationship, whether it be a gay or straight relationship. He also works with mostly queer patients, which may have led to some sort of relationships that happened before Trina entered the picture.
Next are Marvin’s two friends and neighbors, Charlotte and Cordelia. They’re the lesbians from next door, and I think that’s all I have to say about them. They’re clearly in love with each other, and rarely show interest for anyone else. So no, Charlotte and Cordelia are not the straightest characters in the show.
That leaves Trina, Marvin’s ex-wife. Trina is very angry at Marvin for cheating on her and even considers suicide. She is very co-dependent and relies on men in her life. She hates Marvin, but still looks make at their relationship with happiness. She’s jealous of Whizzer, even though Whizzer can do not wrong. And when her and Mendel start a serious relationship, she’s very in love with him. There’s never a moment in the show where she questions her sexuality, and there’s no indication that she ever did. This means that Trina is the straightest character in the 2016 revival of Falsettos.
Now if I only put this much work into essays for school.
