Cigarettes After Sex - Cigarettes After Sex

Cigarettes After Sex is surely one of the best sounding rock albums of the year. It’s dramatic, melodic, elegant, patient. The music is a dream pop mix of The Amazing and Tindersticks: the perfect background for a crooner. Greg Gonzalez, with a contralto’s range, scratches our ears (sometimes too much). It works because the music evokes longing, sadness and desolation. But the lyrics are no match to the music. Gonzalez tells us about longing for romantic moments but keeps talking about sex, much more than any other thing on those relationships. The aftermath is artificiality, the lyrics end up just being silly.
