CSBB Snippet

Here’s a snippet from a CSBB work in progress for you to enjoy!

“What’s her name?”

Clearing his throat, he shakes his head. “I’m waiting until she’s finished to name her.”

She throws him a smirk over her shoulder and says, “You can’t think of one, can you?”

“No, I can’t.” They share a chuckle and he sits down on the bench. “Liam’s suggested Jewel, but…”

When she turns back to him, her brows are furrowed, and her nose is scrunched up in that adorable way again. “She doesn’t seem like a jewel.”

“Aye? What does she seem like?”

He watches as she places her hand on the wheel, her fingers gliding over it before she turns back to him with a shrug. 

“Something a little grittier than jewel.”

The right side of his lips tug up as he asks, “What, like the Jolly Roger?”

“Only if you get a permed wig and a wax mustache to go with it.” 

He breathes out a laugh and mutters, “We’ll see.”

CSBB Snippet

Here’s a snippet from a CSBB work in progress for you to enjoy!

Killian paced in the waiting room while he beat himself up. He should have pulled the shift. It should have been him in that bed, not Emma. His wife was no damsel in distress, but he was her husband and he'd done a piss poor job of protecting her.

His thoughts drifted back towards the previous night. Towards home and the children. Bloody hell. The children. The longer he waited for Whale to come back with some sort of news, the more he worried. What would he tell them if Emma never came home?

“She’s going to be fine,” Henry insisted upon his return. Sometimes, the lad could read his mind just as well as his mother.

Killian took the coffee without comment and Henry sighed. “I know your broody face by now. Look, I’m worried too, but this is Mom we’re talking about. She’s a fighter and you know it.

There was no denying that. If there was any possibility for her to get through this, Emma would find a way. He just had to believe that.

Killian rolled his eyes at the sound of his mother-in-law’s voice in his head again. He could hope without the lecture thank you very much.

His coffee was gone and Henry had just stepped out to grab another when Whale came walking down the hall. Killian rushed towards him.

“Is she all right?” He asked. “What happened? Why aren’t you saying anything?”

“Because you won’t stop long enough to let me talk,” Whale complained. He threw his hands up in surrender when Killian growled at him. “She’s awake, but-“

Killian didn’t have time for “but”. His wife was awake. She was alive. And she was right down the hall. He rushed towards her room, ignoring the doctor who had started chasing after him.

“Emma!” He exclaimed when he threw open the door.

She jumped, earning him a dirty look from the nurse who was in the room. He ignored the scolding when he pushed the nurse away and sat in the chair still at Emma’s bedside. “You had me worried, love,” he said softly as he tried to take her hand in his. Emma whisked it away, the shock on her face quickly dissolving into fear. “Who the hell are you?”

CSBB Snippet

Here’s a snippet from a CSBB work in progress for you to enjoy!

“You didn’t shave your legs, right?” Milah questions, planting her hands on her hips and offering her stern, mom glare as Emma pulls on her black high heels.

“No, of course I didn't,” she fibs, and once she gets the stilettos on, Milah hands Emma her black shawl and clutch before straightening the strap of her dress which had fallen off her shoulder.

"Good because we wouldn't want you to even be tempted to engage in anything more than a kiss on the cheek."

Emma sighs and rolls her eyes, tilting her head. “You wanna feel up my legs for proof? While you’re at it you can frisk me too, to make sure I’m not wearing sexy lingerie under the dress instead of granny panties.”

Milah flashes a sarcastic smirk, throwing the shawl around Emma’s shoulders and securing it in place. “That’s okay, I’ll take your word for it.”

Emma shrugs. “Probably a good thing,” she begins, gracing her sister with a devilish smirk as she grabs her keys from the small end table next to the sofa, “‘cause I’m not wearing anything under the dress anyway.”

Milah throws her a deadly stare, tightening her jaw, and Emma laughs and shakes her head. “I’m messing with you, jeez.” She turns around, opening the door as she looks back at Milah. “I’m wearing a garter belt, so Hook at least has something to pull off of me,” she teases, clutching onto the knob as she starts to step out of the apartment, but not without casually adding, “or to leave on and grab onto - whichever he prefers.” With that, Emma moves quickly, shutting the door behind her before Milah has a chance to throw something at her.

CSBB Snippet

Here’s a snippet from a CSBB work in progress for you to enjoy!

Killian stopped that thought in its tracks. He wasn’t going to dwell on what had gotten him stuck here in the first place. Scrambling to get the rest of the cycle written down in his notebook, Killian tried to focus back on the lecture in front of him.

That was a good thing at least, that he was afforded the opportunity to go to school and get a university degree. Since he had followed Liam’s footsteps into the navy eight years ago, he had thought occasionally about stepping back a bit and going to university and getting his degree. But what had stopped his was not necessarily knowing what he wanted to spend the rest of his life doing, because whenever he looked into his future, he always saw him spending his life at sea, traveling the world with his brother.

Glory for the Jones Brothers.

Killian sighed. Not anymore.

CSBB Snippet

Here’s a snippet from a CSBB work in progress for you to enjoy!

The radio buzzed, hummed quietly in the background, the only sound in the otherwise silent car as they drove. And drove. And drove. Out of London city, out of the metropole and into a new county.

She glanced over to him, watched him out of the corner of her eyes and saw that the moment had passed again. Instead of trembling, his fingers tapped the rhythm of some eighties classic against the dark leather of the steering wheel.

“Okay. I have to ask the question: are you kidnapping me?”

“I know better than to kidnap you.”

Emma narrowed her eyes.

“Still doesn’t completely answer the question, Killian.”

His focus left the road before him and went in search of her.

“I am not.” His eyes and brow emphasized his words before returning to the highway ahead. “We’re almost there.”

Having finally received a hint about their destination, Emma let her eyes roam around, scanning every traffic sign for whereabouts they were and what—or better yet where—Killian’s ‘almost’ could mean. The only thing the boards told her was that they were close to Southend-on-Sea which only told her theme park.

“Are you taking me to Adventure Island, because when I said I liked adventure,” she said, the words mirroring those she uttered when they first met, when they were—more or less—strangers. “I didn’t quite mean it like that.”

“I know.” Killian rolled his eyes. “Now if you’d be so kind as to wait until we arrive.”

“You’re sure you’re not kidnapping me to Belgium or something?”

His look spoke volumes and Emma shut her mouth. The best decision in this situation—the situation where he was her only way of safely getting back to London. Patiently waiting and peering in silence, it was.

She could smell it before she could see it: the salt in the air, briny taste of it on the tip of her tongue.

The sea.

CSBB Snippet

Here’s a snippet from a CSBB work in progress for you to enjoy!

The second Ashley announced a commercial break, Emma dashed for the backstage area, ripping off her mic as she went. Emma found a corner behind the plywood sets and lowered herself shakily to the cold concrete floor. She pulled her knees to her chest and buried her face in the circle of her arms. She felt the black roses atop her head slip down over one ear.

“Please mates,” she heard Killian’s voice behind her, “give her some bloody privacy.”

She felt his hand on her shoulder, and thinking back to the start of their dance, shuddered at his touch. “I sent the camera guys away,” he told her softly, “so if you want to tell me what happened out there –“

“No,” Emma cut him off, “I don’t.”

“I’d like to help –“

“Killian,” she snapped, “leave me alone. Please.”

She heard him release a long sigh, then his hand slipped from her shoulder.

CSBB Snippet

Here’s a snippet from a CSBB work in progress for you to enjoy!

Mrs. Lucas and the Miss Blanchards reached London early on a foggy December morning. Emma eagerly peered through the frosted-up glass pane of the carriage window to catch a glimpse of the passing streets. Even though dawn was just breaking, the streets were already busy with bakers stacking trays of bread onto delivery carts, vendors hawking meat and fruit, and night-watchmen swinging their rattles as they completed their final patrols of the night, their warm breaths misting the cold air. An old woman in a street-corner was dispensing steaming hot bowls of salop to chimney-sweeps just setting off to work and young blades straggling home from their all-night revelries. Even through the sheepskin-padded interior of the carriage, Emma could feel the cold seeping through, chilling her bones, the hot coals that had been packed within the brass footwarmers at their feet having cooled hours ago. The rattle of the carriage as they turned into Harley street woke her sleeping companions from their slumber. 

Mary Margaret stretched, rubbing her eyes. “Are we there?” she asked, her voice rough with sleep. 

“I think we are,” Emma replied. 

The carriage pulled up in front of the Whale residence. Perhaps alerted by the noise of the carriage wheels, the front doors were thrown open and after a few minutes, Dr. and Mrs. Whale stepped out of the door to welcome their guests.

“And I just… Mom, I think -- I don’t know. About Killian.”

The words fell out before she could really process them. It really was late. Ingrid stopped folding another shirt, letting it rest under her hands on her knees. “What about Killian? I thought you liked spending time with him.” Then she got that “Mom Look” on her face, the one that could read way too much into a situation. “You were putting off packing by spending time with him, weren’t you?”

Emma scowled. “Not like that, Mom, God. He was at work. We’ve only been out on two dates.”

“I’m not judging you, dear, I just--”

“Mom! God!”

She held up her hands in surrender. “Alright, Emma, go on with what’s wrong with Killian.”

Emma sighed again, this time more from frustration. “Nothing’s wrong, just. I think I upset him earlier when he found out I didn’t ask him to help me move. Well, no, I know I upset him, because we talked about it, because apparently I can have those conversations where you actually talk about what’s bothering you, but it just… I don’t know how to make him understand that I feel like I’m taking advantage of him. Or like I’m taking advantage of his feelings?”

Ingrid didn’t say anything for a long moment, then Emma saw her shoulders droop. “Emma, sweetheart, Killian’s a grown man. And if he’s anything like every other man on the planet, he doesn’t do anything he doesn’t want to -- even if it happens to involve helping a pretty girl,” she added with a wink, making Emma blush. "Though I'm sure the pretty girl has something to do with it."

"Well, yeah, that's what I'm worried about---

"Emma," Ingrid held up a hand, "what I'm trying to say is that if Killian really didn't want to help you tomorrow -- today -- then he wouldn't have brought it up. Even if he's thinking with parts of his body that aren't his brain --" "Mom!" "--or allowing that to be manipulated by you, he wouldn't offer if he wasn't going to get exactly what he wanted out of it. Which is what, in this case?"
