So, being Korean, (if you haven't noticed, ahem ahem) - I've been asked a lot on my thoughts about this one 'Sarah Jeong'. She went to Berkeley and Harvard Law. She writes at the Verge, Vice's Motherboard, etc etc etc. And now, she's been hired by the New York Times. (Yeah, yeah, get in line with the rest of the high achieving Korean immigrant girls.) She's been in the news a lot recently because of her 'racist' / anti-white Twitter posts. Here are a few examples. "Dumbass fucking white people marking up the internet with their opinions like dogs pissing on fire hydrants", "Are white people genetically predisposed to burn faster in the sun, thus logically being only fit to live underground like grovelling goblins?" or "white people have stopped breeding. you'll all go extinct soon. this was my plan all along."... ok. I'll stop. there's more than enough. So, is she racist? or Is she just one hilariously satirical cookie?
OK, so, Koreans, like people who live in Korea, are generally racist. Like, they are scared of non-Koreans. And if you didn't already know. We are a 'one race' nation. Well, a largely-one race nation. They have a stereotypical picture of the other races in their head, usually thanks to mainstream media, (great, thanks Hollywood.) Even my sweet old grandma once asked me if my friends who were black carried guns or were part of gangs and that I should not have white boyfriends because they were too sexually active/ aggressive. Sigh. Its getting better though. We've been getting more and more exposed to the other races and through education and integration, its been getting exponentially better than it was just a few years ago. Not perfect, but progressing. Now, with that said. Is Sarah Jeong's comments kind of like the racist comments a 'blank slate, not racially exposed /educated ' South Korean citizen would probably say? Nope. Her words are laced with hatred, aggression and violence. ( From a psychological analysis POV, she sounds bitter and clearly, she's been through a lot of crap with white men. Sorry, dear. But you went to Harvard. Not surprised.)
And her response to the dug-up tweets is that they were written as a method of 'counter trolling'. Yeah, let's not kid ourselves. She's intelligent, very good with her words, she understands racism... there really was no other alternative than blasting anti-white posts ??? really??seriously?? (hand on shoulders, right foot tapping, tongue clicking, head shaking )
As a writer myself, and yes- I might not have the credentials that she has, but hey, that makes this even more disappointing on her behalf -- we should all know that the word we write are sacred. Our words have power. Our words have double, triple, quadruple times more power than anyone else who is not a writer. You have the influence. Whats the point in being a writer? You want your voice heard. You want your peoples' voices heard. You want to bring change. And this is the way you wield your sword? In anger, lashing out in blind hatred?
No. You should know better. You've been hurt by horrible people. So, wouldn't you not want to be them??
Racist or not racist, dude, just stop spreading hate.
As a Korean, as an Asian, and as a woman who has a variety of very nice white male and female (and all the other pronouns this world has come to create) relationships in my life, here is what I have to say. "Tsk, tsk. Someone needs to get her wedgie fixed."
**OH! And if you're interested in my thoughts about her being fired or not fired, ... its the NYT. They probably already knew about these. **
