Almost every song she releases hits the top 40 on the singles chart, and now Taylor Swift has matched one of the greatest musicians when it comes to the most placements.
Taylor Swift Has Now Charted The Third-Most Top 40 Hits
By Hugh McIntyre May 8, 2019
This week, Taylor Swift and new duet partner Brendon Urie of Panic! at the Disco were clearly hoping to rule the Hot 100 with their new single “Me!,” and though they didn’t end up on top (they’ve been forced to settle for second place, at least for now), this is still a huge frame for Swift, as she’s matched one of the greatest when it comes to the most hit singles.
“Me!” is, incredibly, Swift’s fifty-seventh top 40-charting entry on the Hot 100, which means she now claims the third-most such successes on the all-genre tally of the most popular songs in America. She is currently tied with Elton John, who also managed as many placements in his career. While John hasn’t landed a top 40 hit in the U.S. in 20 years, Swift is still sending tracks onto the ranking in rapid succession, and chances are pretty good that she will grab her fifty-eighth top 40 single when she drops her next song (which should be sometime soon).
Drake currently still leads the way when it comes to top 40 entries, as he’s collected 95. It won’t be long before he becomes the first musician to chart 100, and there’s no sign he’s going to be slowing down after that. Lil Wayne and Elvis Presley both sent 81 songs with their name attached into the region, though it’s worth mentioning that many of Presley’s biggest hits predated the Hot 100, and thus his true count would likely be much higher had he come a bit later. Like Drake and Swift, Wayne is also not done producing hits, and he's surely going to pass Presley at some point in the not-too-distant future.
“Me!” is Urie’s first top 40 hit on his own, though as the frontman of Panic! at the Disco, he’s landed inside the important tier, which typically defines when a song becomes a true hit, on several occasions. The band that made him a star has now collected three such hits, bringing his career total to four.
While “Me!” is currently in the driver’s seat, it may be able to rise to the throne in the coming weeks, as its competition, Lil Nas X and Billy Ray Cyrus’ “Old Town Road,” eventually slides in popularity, and as both Swift and Urie continue to heavily promote their latest.
