British Street Artist Banksyâs Artworks!
âI Think Thereâs Space For Art To Be Loud, Crass And Obvious. If It Looks Like The Rantings of An Angry Adolescent Whatâs Wrong With That? What Was Wrong With Punk?ââ BANKSY, Dismaland Website, 2015
For a 2023 exhibition, Banksy included a Crass poster as part of a diorama of his boyhood bedroom. The anarchist punk band, which also used stencils, influenced the artist. Source: Rikard Anderson
In 2021, Banksy stenciled this image of a prisoner using sheets of paper from a typewriter to escape from HM Reading Prison, which was closed in 2014. Reuters/Matthew Childs
In summer 2021, the artist introduced what he dubbed his âGreat British Spraycationâ during the coronavirus pandemic. Like his New York residency and his later work in Ukraine, this series was a group of pieces that appeared in various locations, this time in the southeastern coast of England. Reuters/Peter Nicholls
The satirical pieces created for Banksyâs âGreat British Spraycationâ were confirmed by the artist in a video on his Instagram account. This piece initially had scrap metal in front of it that resembled a boat. It was one of many works by Banksy interpreted as speaking to the issue of migration. Reuters/Peter Nicholls
In the town of Lowestoft, Banksy sprayed a large seagull on the side of a house and left a trash bin containing large strips of foam that resembled French fries. Reuters/Peter Nicholls
Banksy has produced multiple pieces for Britainâs Glastonbury Festival over the years. In this 2022 piece, one protestor hits another using a placard with the peace symbol on it. Reuters/Dylan Martinez
In 2024, Banksy likely used a paint-filled fire extinguisher to create this green pattern on a wall in north London. When viewed from a distance, it resembles the leaves of the pollarded tree in front of it. Reuters/Toby Melville
summer 2024, Banksy delighted fans by producing a series of animal-themed stencils across London. This one, on the entrance to London Zoo, was designed to appear as if a gorilla was freeing the animals inside. Reuters/Hollie Adams
In this piece from the same series, Banksy stenciled the silhouette of a mountain goat balancing precariously on a small buttress. CCTV images released by local media at the time showed two men in high-visibility jackets arriving at the scene with a truck-mounted cherry picker. Reuters/Toby Melville
This piece, also from the series of animal silhouettes Banksy stenciled across London in 2024, showed two elephants reaching toward each otherâs trunks on the side of a building in Fulham, London. Reuters/Mina Kim
The Late Night Mash (2021-Present)
A satire show about current events hosted by a team of comedians.
This show has mostly the same basic structure and methods as The Mash Report (2017-20) but there are some variations. For one thing there is more freedom since leaving the BBC so there isnât the need to pretend to be unbiased and the criticisms of the government feel more genuine. It also fits better into a longer time frame.
Itâs still fairly formulaic, bringing some of the same sketch styles and segments from its previous incarnation. Some of the jokes are drawn out far beyond their tolerance to be funny but the times these are least effective is when the same gag is done multiple times without actually building on it, just repetition in place of development.
There is some pretty diverse representation and this is entertaining because some different styles of humour are used which break the formula slightly and it reinforces the basic messages of equity and equality that the show promotes. The newsdesk is one of the funnier portions of the show and create a welcome way of dividing the parts of the show.
Since moving to a different station it has naturally been forced to include many adverts, without the ability to skip these itâd feel less worth watching as they take up about a third of the run-time. The first season ended with a compilation episode which has never struck as useful but seems more a device to economize a time-filling episode for an extra week, while feeling inconsistent and less possible to invest in.
