What are your thoughts and opinions about Reevesverse/Dano Riddler? Since I've seen a wide range of views on his character.
I see him as a very tragic character, someone who was failed by the system and molded by his upbringing, not necessarily straight up evil, sort of just a broken/beaten man with very unhealthy coping mechanisms.
Hello!
I agree. His character is pretty tragic, especially with the background he’s given in the comics by Dano.
I also think he’s a little complex in a sense. He isn’t straight up evil, but more he was pushed in that direction given his environment. He had no support system whatsoever and I agree, he had very unhealthy coping mechanisms. I personally believe The lack of emotional connection in his formative years plays a HUGE part in his motives, and his parasocial obsession with The Batman. He’s very emotionally stunted, and, has no way of expressing his feelings in a normal or healthy manner.
Honestly, I do really like this version. It’s very realistic, which is what Reeves was going for in this universe he created. Riddler is very… idk what the proper word I’m looking for is. Human? He was just some guy, unnoticed, didn’t stand out, of course that was until he started killing public officials. I think that’s really what makes this version work. It’s relatable. I see a lot of “oh, he’s just some guy.” But that’s exactly it. He was just someone’s coworker. Someone’s neighbor. That’s what makes this version scary. You see this masked figure killing public figures, and getting away with no less, only for it to be revealed he was just… Edward Nashton. A forensic accountant. A weird, social outcast. It really puts a sort of fear into Gothamites, now they know literally anyone can do anything, and not even the GCPD, not even the self-proclaimed vigilante, Batman, can save them. It really works, and it was an excellent catalyst into really propelling the Reevesverse forward. Edward Nashton just proved to other up and coming criminals that they can do anything. They can be anyone.
But I digress, I feel like I’m just rambling haha. Long story short, he’s very different from the typical Question mark, green-wearing whimsical Riddler we’re used to. But, it works for this universe he’s portrayed in. It’s dark, gritty, and real.
