After dinner, SS and I sit outside on her balcony overlooking the greenery and lights of Bangsar. This is about four years ago, when both SS and I still lived in Bangsar. 

S is telling me about the difficulty she is having at work. How there’s this one colleague that’s making her life a living hell. Someone who seems determine to undermine her at every point. 

“I’m handing in my resignation letter tomorrow,” she tells me.

R texts me from India to tell me that she’d just gone on a date with someone who knows me. This was two years ago. 

“They said they met you with L for dinner while they were in KL, and the three of you watched Masaan together.”

I text back my surprise, but also that I imagine the Bangalore queer scene being small enough that the people within it would end up dating each other eventually. 

Still though, interesting.

Last year, after a gallery show, my friend K and I go to meet a group of her friends for a drink, and towards the end of the night, one of the friends turns to me and says,

“You should meet my friend T. I think you’ll get along.”

Last night, T messages me from Dubai that she’s sitting with someone after a conference, and this person told her a crazy coincidence story where the last time this person was in KL, they went for dinner and a movie with this Nigerian dude, and then when they went back to India, went on a date with that same Nigerian dude’s ex. 

“Was the Nigerian dude’s name Al?” T asked.

“Small world.”

Three weeks or so ago, before SS flew to Dubai, she tells me over dinner how she’s anxious about going because she’s going to be on a panel with T, the colleague, now ex-colleague, who made her life a living hell four years ago.

“This is T from AX?” I ask.

“You know T?”

Small world.

Many years ago, This American Life had an episode called No Coincidence, No Story.
