Free State of Jones is a 2016 American historical war film inspired by the life of Southern Unionist Newton Knight, who led a successful armed revolt against the Confederacy in Jones County, Mississippi, throughout the American Civil War. The scrip was written and the film was also co-produced, and directed by Gary Ross based on a story by Ross and Leonard Hartman.
The film stars Matthew McConaughey, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Mahershala Ali, and Keri Russell.

The Iron Collar and Its Meaning
The iron collar with L‑shaped bars, shown in Free State of Jones, is one of the starkest symbols of the system of slavery in the American South. Its design was brutally functional: a metal ring locked around the neck, with long L‑shaped prongs extending outward to restrict movement and make escape nearly impossible. These prongs caught on branches, brush, and doorways, preventing a fleeing person from crawling through the woods or hiding in tight spaces. The collar turned the wearer into a constantly visible silhouette.
But its purpose went beyond physical restraint. The collar was meant to impose psychological domination — to mark a human being as controlled, exposed, and dehumanized. It served as both a tool and a message, a reminder of the violence required to sustain the institution of slavery.
What makes the image so powerful, especially in the film, is the contrast between the device and the person wearing it. Even under such conditions, the individual remains present, dignified, and unmistakably human.
